Excuse me, but did they just sing "Shout to the Lord" on American Idol?

I know there will be plenty of other bloggers who focus on other substantial highlights from American Idol (America Gives Back segment) that aired last night. There was of course, the Miley Cyrus appearance and the cute banter segment with Billy Crystal, that adorably-cute-I-just-wanna-hug-her, Carrie Underwood, not to mention, the amazing documentaries that remind us how very blessed we are...not to mention, our responsibility to help those who are less fortunate.

However, I want to give a standing ovation for the goose-bump moment at the end of the show when the contestants gathered on stage and sang, "Shout to the Lord" accompanied by a church choir singing behind them. Oh. my. goodness. My jaw dropped to the ground. I absolutely LOVE that song and I don't care how old it is, it will always remain on my list of top ten worship songs.

I can still remember the first time I ever heard it. It was in 1997 and I was in a hotel room with a speaking engagement scheduled the next morning. I couldn't sleep, so I was channel surfing and I ended up on some gospel show where Darlene Zschech was singing the song. At the time, I had never heard of Darlene Zschech or "Shout to the Lord," but the words made me literally weep as I listened. I did everything I could in the days that followed to hunt down that song. I played it so much that my youngest (3 years old at the time) would request it at bedtime and knew every word. And folks, I don't sing. But we sang that chorus together night after night while I threw up a prayer that he would live the remainder of his years believing every word of it.

I pray the song has the same impact on others who watched and perhaps, heard it for the first time. May God use it mightily and give it a second birth. Even though they felt a need to substitute "My Shepherd" for "My Jesus," I pray the song will serve as a springboard that others may come to know my Shepherd, my Jesus.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil. 2:9-11)

Lord, I sing for joy at the work of Your hands; Forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand; Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.

I missed that moment. We recorded it with Tivo and the end got cut off. That is amazing that they sang it. I read an earlier post though and the writer was very upset that they sang My Shepard instead of My Jesus, but I think that the song probably still had power and touched hearts don't you? Thank you for writing such an encouraging blog. I find your advice and comments very helpful as I raise a little girl and boy. I first heard of you four years ago when I took your Bible Study about Proverbs 31. Excellent.

One of our Pastor's is a Christian music producer, and we noticed he was singing in the choir with M. Carey and with "Shout to the Lord!"
This was exciting to see!! (I only was this part as I had Bible Study and Date night with DH!!

I loved the ending of American Idol! My husband and I sat there so surprised! It was wonderful!

(PS - I need to figure out how to get an identity so I don't have to always post as annonymous! (I don't have a blog and I really don't know what OpenID or Name/URL are asking for.)

I have never watched American Idol - not once, ever - and have managed to live without it. But, boy am I sorry I missed my favorite song! My jaw, too, would have dropped to the ground. Bravo, Idol! Another indication that all is not lost even in today's media & culture.

I fell in love with "Shout to the Lord" several years ago when our church choir director introduced the song to our aging, bordering on fuddy-duddy congregation. It has become a favorite and there's nothing like joining my voice with 500 others on a Sunday morning and belting it out! Last week I was incredibly moved at the end of Beth Moore's Living Proof Live event in Jacksonville when Travis Cottrell got us started with, "My Jesus..." and then quietly dropped out while the 14,500 of us in the audience sang the entire song a cappella to close the event. WOW!

This month our same choir director has introduced another wonderful Darlene Zschech song to our church - "Dwell in Your House" - but no song will ever replace "Shout" in my heart.

"My comfort, my shelter, tower of refuge and strength! Let every breath, all that I am, never cease to worship you!"

Not on GodTube yet. Vicki, did you realize they substituted "shepherd" for "Jesus" at the beginning? I didn't catch it - probably because I was still in shock they were singing it!

Yep, they sure did and I was like you - awestruck! I couldn't believe I was seeing it on American Idol, but I was praising God that I was. What a great way to end the show.

Amazing, but they did take Jesus' name out of the beginning. What was the point of Ben Stiller at the end? He truly trashed a wonderful end to the show. My 9 y.o. son picked up on the theme of Mariah's. song. He said "Mom, she is singing about Jesus", I told him, " I think you are right". I wonder what is going on behind the scenes. I pray that Simon and everyone else there will be saved. We love you in Alabama. WAR EAGlE! Melanie H.

I'll be looking for that on GodTube since I missed it. However, I have to give props to our girl Mandisa. Just a short time ago she was bashed for singing 'Shackles' on AI, and yet today they are featuring a Christian song.

I'm thinking her strong stand then and subsequent success now have the producers thinking there is something to this 'God' music afterall!

I recorded AI last night and have not watched it however I just watched the clip. Oh I am in tears b/c the performance was beautiful!!
YES!! they sang that song on TV for MILLIONS of viewers - PRISE THE LORD!!
That is awesome and makes me want to watch the whole thing right now.
May God be glorifed through that bold and wonderful perfomance by the final 8!
Oh and my hubby and I totally notice those kinds of moments. Have you noticed how many contestants have sang about Jesus this season or worn some sort of Christian symbol?! Incredible!
Blessings,

While, I was excited and had the goosebump moment, my 7 year old daughter was singing along and we all noticed together that Jesus was edited out. As we answered her question to why this would happen, we had to do the explanation of the watered down version because not all believe in Jesus. Idol needed to make sure they did not offend any Jews, Hindus, Muslims, etc... Any thing can be a 'god' or 'lord,' or even a 'shepherd, 'but there is only one Jesus. The song is written to Jesus. I thought it another example of a pop culture with a politically correct ending. Followed by the bleeped out fowl mouth Ben Stiller ruined any sembalince and respect for Jesus at the ending. I wonder what Jesus thought. Call me old fashioned and call me out of touch- but please call me a Christian.

I am glad I am not the only one that noticed that they took Jesus out of the song. Isn't that like our world to take scripture or in this case a song and twist it just a bit or change it just a bit. I am not sure how I feel about the song being sung...at first when they started I was elated, but as I realized the changes, it saddened me. The ending with ben stiller ruined the whole thing for me.

Wow. I wonder how many knew to Whom they were singing.

He is God and there is no other! American Idol was HIS venue last night.

A blatant reminder that He can be glorified in the midst of any and all things, according to His Will and Power.

Long time reader, never commented before .. at least I don't think so, BUT anyway, I don't watch American Idol, but caught the entire song last night as I surfing for more tornado news and stopped when I heard the opening music and yes dropped my jaw as well!!! I could not believe what I was hearing.

I was SO excited to see this song front and center on the show I know most of America was watching.
Even though they said shepard instead of Jesus, He is our shepard and you never know what seed was planted last night, even unintentionally.

I haven't seen AI yet. It's sitting in my TiVo, calling my name, but I wanted to chime in and say that I heard Christ Sligh from last season singing on a Christian station the other night. Yeah, Chris!!!

I didn't see the show to know what Ben Stiller's comments were, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

There is nothing like the contrast of good and evil in the same place to act as a witness. The presence of the Lord in that place was sufficient to expose Mr. Stiller's comments as the less desirable behavior, even for unbelievers.

Glory to God!
