The Princess and the Prom

Once upon a time, a nurse placed a tiny baby girl into her mother's arms and with the eloquence of a royal introduction said, "Meet your Princess." The mother smiled as she nestled that baby girl close to her and said a prayer for the little Princess.

As she stared at the tiny, delicate features on her newborn Princess, her mind was filled with visions of Princess grandeur. She pictured the dance classes, tutus and pink ballet slippers.

She smiled when she thought about the Easter dresses to come, with white lace tights and matching hair bows.

She wondered if her Princess would enjoy doing princess things like playing dress up.

She desperately hoped that her Princess would be a daddy's girl. She prayed her earthly father would shower her with unconditional love, so she would have a small glimpse of her heavenly Father's love.

Finally, she said a prayer that she and the Princess would be close. She knew there would be bumps in the road, but she hoped that they would be few and far between.

She looked forward to watching the Princess grow up. And she hoped that when it came time for the ball, the Princess would need her help.

And alas, it came to be.

Okay Vicki, you could have just shown a pretty picture of her in her dress before Prom. =P But no, instead I'm sitting here bawling over the journey of a princess I've never met and in 30 seconds will be closing my laptop to go hug and twirl with my own little princess.

She's beautiful, Vicki!

What a beautiful journey. Your daughter is stunning! The only down side is it makes you realize how very fast they grow up. Hold her close.

I love the pictures of your girl growing bigger - and your changing hair styles! :-) I kid. That was a sweet story that got my eyes to water a little. Probably allergies.
I better give my girls a big hug when they get home though.

Last night I sang the alphabet song about 20 times in a row to my toddler princess. It was one of those moments that had me wondering just how long the repetitive stage will last (not to mention how long I had before I could put her to bed.) Thanks for the reminder to enjoy each step, and to not wish the time away.

(And thank goodness the Steven Curtis Chapman "Cinderella" song wasn't playing while I read this post, or I'd be bawling my eyes out!!!)

The bottle of Rave on the bathroom countertop... what a flashback to my own days with my sisters crammed in the bathroom getting ready for school. Thanks for sharing your memories with us!

Beautiful pictures. I know you must be proud of her. Posts like this make me take a deep breath and enjoy the stages my own children are in.

My big smile came when I saw that can of Rave hairspray on the counter. Oh, the days of Rave. :)

You know, I have to confess that some days I miss the old Rave hairspray. It just had a way of tackling the Texas humidity like no other hairspray can.

But, I'm definitely NOT pining away for my old Princess Di hair cut or the heat rollers phase!

Gosh how I remember my prom night and my mom helping me get ready - seems like yesterday. Now, I'm getting ready to graduate from college!
When I think back to my high school days what I remember most is my relationship with God. I was so involved with my church and Christian friends. Unfortunately that changed when I came to college. I left my relationship with God for a relationship with men, parties and anything but church. It has not been the best of times. Not to say that college isn't a blast - some of it has been awesome, but losing my contact with Christ has been hard.
A few months ago I was feeling very down about this and I called a friend of mine who I grew up with in church and she directed me to your site. It was a blog directed to Carleone. I totally cried when I read it. And then listening to that song - it was about me!! I could so totally relate but was afraid to say anything about how I was feeling. I just want to thank you for that. I have been back to church and it has been awesome (not to mention getting a date from a nice Christian boy)
I talked to my mom about what had been going on - and like all mom's she already knew and had been praying.
Thanks again. BTW, have you ever heard back from Carleone?

Ashlee, bless you for your honesty about your college years. It made my day to hear how God could use one post to nudge you back into His loving care. Praise Him for that.

I've had several others ask for an update on Corleone and I may just need to do a whole post on it. I actually met her for lunch a month or so ago. She had mentioned in her first post that we "knew each other" and she ended up emailing me and disclosing her identity. I so appreciated her heart and honesty. She is in the church every week, but had hit a dry spell. We've all been there. I so appreciated her vulnerability and honesty about it.

The worst thing we can do in a dry spell is convince ourselves that we are surely the only one, huh? I was proud of her for sharing her frustration and have been praying for her. Just as I am proud of you for following through when God prompted your heart to call your friend. You are precious. And give your friend a hug for me...and your sweet, praying mom.

Thank you for visiting my blog and please, please weigh in more often. It seems I'm getting more and more youngsters on here and we moms want to hear from you girls who can offer us some insight to this challenging culture. Your comments are always valued. I'm so excited for you and your new beginning. A mentor friend of mine once said, "It's never too late to begin again." How I thank God for that!

Hi Vicki!
I've been reading your email for awhile now, but have never responded because our internet filter somehow would not allow it. I read your book and got a facebook account--and I have enjoyed it!
I can relate to your stories because I have a son who turned 20 in January, a girl who is going to her senior prom this Saturday, and a 15 year old son. I cried many times when my oldest went off to college, and now I'm preparing for my daughter's graduation. I cried reading your blogs, I'm also thankful for my kid's best friends being the ones they grew up with in church! I also have 2 younger girls--11 and 7.
Thanks for your ministry!

Oh my goodness Vicki, your daughter looks GORGEOUS. And for that matter, so are your other two kids...not to mention YOU.

Thank you for sharing these tender moments with us. I just love how real and honest you are!!!

Looking at beautiful Paige and Hayden I am reminded of the verses from "Sun rise, sun set", that I sent out in a Christmas card several years ago...

"Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset,
Swiftly flow the days,
Seedings turn overnight to sunflowers,
Blossoming as we gaze.

Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset,
Swiftly, fly the years,
One season following another,
Laden with happiness and tears."

...forgive me for being so sappy, but I just couldn't help myself...

Thank you for sharing so much of you with us.
Love, Love your friend you've never met,
Joan :)
