Virtue Alert 101

I realize that many of you have no idea where “Virtue Alert” originated and the story behind its oh-so-humble beginnings. Consider this a crash course of sorts. The idea for a sound-the-alarm “virtue alert” warning to parents was birthed on February 1, 2004. I was sitting in my game room with a gaggle of teens watching the live half-time performance during Super Bowl XXXVIII. You might remember it. It was the one where Janet Jackson decided to flash her bare bosom to the entire free world without giving a moment's thought to the fallout it would produce in homes across America.
It was in those hyper-ventilating moments following the bosom-flashing debacle that I found myself wishing for a forum to rant about such virtue-less atrocities with fellow concerned parents. You know, like the frustration of having to explain to a ten year-old what a "starburst nipple shield” was (as if I knew!) and why a woman who's nearly my age would feel a need to have one much less show it off to a watching world. Sigh.
Another year would go by before my desire to vent on a larger scale would blossom into an online reality. In 2005, on the heels of countless MySpace creepy predator stories, pantieless popstar mishaps, and more anything-but-virtuous events that left concerned moms and dads scratching their heads in disbelief, Virtue Alert came to be. It originally began as an email "alert" to subscribers and was delivered monthly to their inboxes. At the end of 2006, Virtue Alert morphed into an actual blog where readers could offer their own comments and in some cases, form a unified force to take action against key virtue offenders. If you haven't subscribed to receive Virtue Alert updates in your inbox (now delivered weekly), stop and click here to do that right now! We'll wait for you. (Vicki whistling and drumming fingers)
After getting my feet wet in the blogging world by posting about once every week or two in the first half of 2007, I discovered in the process that I actually love to blog—--and not just about Virtue Alert related-topics. Today, I post entries about 3-4 times a weeks on topics ranging from bittersweet college drop-offs and flashbacks to the past (Flashback Fridays) to an occasional rant about a hoochie mama sighting or one of my adorable Yorkies eating my manuscript (true story). Oh, and just in case my kids (20, 18, and 15) are reading this and accuse me of loving the dogs more, I blog about them too...when they give me permission. :)
As a speaker and author, blogging has also afforded me the awesome privilege of getting to know many of you who are in my speaking and reading audience. And let me tell you a little secret: Sometimes those of us who write the books and stand on the platform wish we could just pal around with you and your posse for a day and chat it up over a cup of coffee. While I can’t stop by on a regular basis to many of your blogs, I love to drop in on occasion and read about you and your sweet family and hear about your own journey of faith.
So, there you have it. That is the story of how this blog came to be. Today, it reaches a wide assortment of folks, including moms, dads, teens, college students, singles, ministry leaders, and even a few dog-lovers who tune in for an occasional (ahem, weekly?) Yorkie post. And while I won't be sending a thank you note to Janet Jackson for providing the inspiration behind this blog, I am thankful to discover that I'm not alone in my desire to see a revival for good-ol'-fashioned Godly virtue.
Thank you so much for stopping by. If you have any topics/questions/news stories you would like to let me know about or see me address in the future, please email my Assistant, Shawna. I certainly don't claim to be an expert, but together, I pray we can join forces in an effort to initiate positive change.
Oh, and if you have a blog, please comment with the address so I can stop by sometime and say “hi.” Even if you don't have a blog, please let me know your first name, so I can say a prayer for you. In the meantime, please accept this cyber gift:
Maybe someday, we can grab a real cup and solve the problems of the world!

Love the new look! Thanks for equipping us with valuable info as we raise our daughters..and our sons. (By the way, I emailed Macy's today and they sent me an email saying they forwarded my complaint to Customer Service.)
Oh, you got a blog face lift?! Lovely!
Thanks for sharing the story of Virtue Alert. I love your blog. I booked marked it the first time I read it and then added you on my blogroll. I have two tweens in the house a son who is 10 and a daughter who is 9. I bought your books too. I'm glad you like to blog - I do too :)
Vicki,
You new blog look is great. It was fun to read the story of how your blog world came to life. I have to admit, I shrieked out loud when I read the date of the janet jackson
unveiling. It truly seems like yesterday. I guess if I think about it, we have seen much more flesh since then haven't we!
Bless you and keep up the awesome ministry!

Thanks for the background info. I am going right now to sign up for your emails.
Vicki,
Your new blog design is awesome! Thanks for the backstory of "Virtue Alert." I'm not sure how I ended up here other than I was familiar with your books and maybe I saw your link on Amanda's blog. But thanks for all the great info on raising my girl and boy!
Blessings,
Dori

love your new look, vicki!
Thanks for the cup of joe Vicki and LOVE the new look...gotta get me one!
Blessings,

Love your new look!
I love stopping by here for all the reasons you listed, but what drew me here was the insight on virtue and what to look for. I'm a Mom to 2 girls (6 and 2) and I'm a SS teacher to high school girls. I've worked with youth for 7 years and became aware early on of the plague of 'doing anything to fit in' and a culture that desperately needs Jesus. I study all I can for my SS class, but pray God gives me wisdom to lead my girls in His ways so they will have a heart to follow Him.
I love your blog, Vickie. Keep going....
Thank you for all of your effort you have put into your family and personal ministries. I am a mother to three kids: 3rd grade and under. I also lead a small group for a woman's bible study. I was recently asked to lead a Wednesday night small group for teen girls starting in the fall! Equipped with God's Word and support from "Vicki's words" I know I can be a light for HIM to these girls!

Love the author of this blog
Great new look. I found Virtue Alert after I bought Logged On Tuned Out when I heard you talk about it on Focus On The Family. Must have been meant to be b/c I can only once in a bluemoon pick up that station. I look forward to seeing you at 1st Baptist Spartanburg in Sept. Say a prayer my 5th grader and I can get a good group to come with us.
What a nice surprise in the morning! I love what you have done with the place. I thank you for what you are doing to help us moms of girls to navigate this strange world of ours. You are on my blogroll and I am always telling people about what you are doing and the great ministry you have.
Do you twitter?
Vicki,
Your blog facelift was so pleasing to the eyes! Love the design. Thank you so much for the virtue alerts. I too stumbled across you one day..and am so glad I did. It is great to be kept informed, especially raising 3daughters! I am in the middle of the book

Love the pretty update, Vicki! Thanks for sharing your blog story and for all the encouragement you give me.
Love the new look! Love your blog! Thanks for sharing your rants with us and for encouraging me (and all the other parents who read your blog) that I am not alone in fighting against the grain of our culture.
Here is my blog: http://joyinthejourney1.blogspot.com/.
Oh, and thanks for the cyber coffee! :-)
Thank you for sharing the "virtue alert" story. I have loved your blog for awhile now. My husband is a Junior High Pastor and we are always looking for sources to help in our quest for shepherding new Godly generations. I read your book, Your Girl, several years ago when my husband was in seminary and I so appreciated it. When I found your blog I was delighted and have since notified many Moms to check it out. Thank you for being a Mom who isn't afraid to call offensive things out, even in this tolerant culture we live in. Love the new look! Hope you have a wonderful day Vicki!

Awesome new design! Love it! My kids are the same ages as your kids, and I consider your blog an invaluable source. Thank you for the insight into the teen world!
As a frequent visitor, I LOVE the new look!! Reading your editorials on the state of our society today and how it affects our children, is like talking to my girlfriends over coffee. I can't tell you how many times I've talked to myself out loud as I was reading your blog, with an affirmative "Absolutely!" or "Exactly what I was saying yesterday!"
Thanks for your continued insight and humor!

I will never forget the first time you left a comment on my blog. I was so excited, I ran to to my husband and said, you're never going to guess who left a comment on my blog!
His first guess......Beth Moore.
I told him no but he was close!! :)
And then when you mentioned me on your blog (the princess Di hair thing) well, you know I just had to blog about that!!
Thanks for keeping us informed on virtue alerts and I love getting the emails!
I'm free for coffee anytime!
Thanks for the overview! I know that I don't comment very often, but I check your blog every day, and I have gotten SO MUCH from reading your "rants", and love every bit of it!! You're a blessing, thank you for putting effort into this blog! =)
I have a 16-month-old daughter and want to say thank you for keeping an eye out for her (& me) on the dangers of our world. I do like reading about your kids - when they let you blog about them!

Ah! and the *colors* of your makeover are fabulous!
The new decor is lovely! However it is you started, I really enjoy reading your rants AND all the tidbits about your life. =)
Vicki,
Congratulations on a beautiful new face cover!!
Thanks for leading me to from yada-yada, your books, to your blog & for your Godly support in continuing to raise my three daughters; and now, new grandbaby girl!
It must be my computer, because I don't read anyone else is having the same trouble--I'm having difficulty reading the print that is in the light mustard/gray poupon color. (it's too light to read in some areas of the blog)
Thanks so much & may He reward you for being His faithful servant.
Vickie,
I love your blogs. I don't know how I came across you blog the first time, but the first one I read was "An open letter to Hoochie Mammas" and I was hooked. I have read Your Girl and led a Your Girl bible study. I have 4 kids 2 boys ages 15 and 13 and 2 girls ages 10 and 8. I look forward to my virtue alerts. I know you always have something to say. You always shoot straight. Keep up the awsome work you are doing. God Bless and keep those sharp blogs comming.
Vicki -
I led a group of high school girls through "Virtuous Reality" about 8 years ago. In the course of that time, I became pregnant with (of course unknowingly at the time) my daughter (now 7).
Since her birth, I have so taken to heart everything the Lord has put upon your heart about our girls. I purchased a copy of "Your Girl" the first time I saw it on the shelves.
Last summer, I facilitated "The Virtuous Woman" with a group of my girlfriends and the Lord did some amazing things in my life through it and some other reading I was doing at the time.
I only recently entered the blogging world and found your blog. Virtue Alert has become a several times a week read for me.
SO, I take this opportunity to say thank you for standing in the gap for our girls. For being used of God to bring things to my attention long before I ever knew I needed them.
A fellow Texan!

Hi Vicky! My name is Amanda and I saw you at a BCM conference in FL with Voddie my junior year in college...about 8 years ago. Anywho, it's so nice to meet up with you now that I have a little girl of my own. I'm trying to stay up on what's going on now, hoping to be a better mom in the future!
I just found you today, what a great site! I find myself ranting to my husband almost everyday about the things of this world that I will one day have to explain to my now 6-month old daughter. I appreciate you stepping up to share!
Vickie,
I'm so grateful my friend forwarded me your Virtue Alert email months ago.
I'd love for you to drop in to my blog sometime:

Mine is "The Busy PTs Guide to Finding Balance" blog.
The premise is finding balance at home, at work, and between home and work. Sometimes the topic is therapy related, but even the principles in those posts usually can be applied to any work environment.

Hi Vicki,
Your bloggy makeover looks great! I have been enjoying your blog since I first heard about it back in Nov.'07. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for blogging Vicki, I have enjoyed your posts although I am not sure if I ever commented until now. So I am delurking to say "hi". :)
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
I have two girls and they are much younger but already I'm facing image questions and issues. I'm new to blogging and just want to say so many I've read have been about the lighter side of life I did wonder if many people were as frustrated with certain things as I am. I tend toward the deeper more difficult topics and I have to say it was reassuring to know I'm not the only one who rants - that is the word my hubby and I use to describe some of what I write.
My blog is
http://31woman.blogspot.com/
If you want to drop by some time that would be great.
I feel so strongly about woman and our girls so thankyou for your work.
Thank you so much for this website. As a LifeWay employee, I have seen your books and magazines many times. I have always felt that they didn't quite apply to me since my girls are only 4 and 1. However, after reading your blog, I realize that I have to start now with them. This is such a great resource. Thank you.
Hi,
just wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog! I will sign up for your emails also...
really appreciate the low down on what is facing us in the future!...and love your new design,

Vicki - THANK YOU for creating Virtue Alert. I am a parent of a tweenage daughter (and now a tween son too) and didn't know where to start. I bought her the Between magazine and she LOVED it. It really helped open up communication even more between us. We're SO excited for the 2nd one (darn, I wish they were monthly).
Thanks again and God bless!
Allison
Hi Vickie,
I'm a regular reader of your blog. I don't always comment, but I am often touched by your post and can relate to the "mom" issues. My daughter and I have also attended one of your conferences and I have read your books.
I know this is not a "Dear Vickie" blog, but I respect your opinion as a christian mom and leader and I was hoping for some advice on an issue.
My husband and I are dealing with a problem over a boy's interest in our daughter. I was wondering if anyone of the other readers have had a similar experience or if you can offer advice.
I daughter is 13 and a boy (16) has a strong interest in her. He sees her at our church youth group every week. He follows her around the youth room and constantly approaches her. Also, he stares at her and makes comments on everything she does. She is miserable with this kind of attention. I need to point out that he is more experienced and worldly than our daugther. I feel like she is being stalked. We have had friends approach us with concern over this so I know I don't have an over active mom radar. My husband and I have talked to our youth minister and pastor. They, in turn, have both spoken to this boy. He acts like it's no big deal and he says he will back off, but he hasn't. We feel like our hands our tied, and well, this is church. We can't just kick him out, but at the same time, this is my baby.
Do you have any advice on how to handle this boy? I don't think I've read about this kind of situation anywhere. "Stalkers in Church." Any advice please
Truely, Rosemary
Rosemary, reading about the scenario caused my "mom radar" to also kick in. I can imagine that it makes your daughter uncomfortable and what a shame that she has to feel that way at church. Do you know the boy's parents? I would think that it's acceptable to meet with them and have the youth minister come along. Maybe one more warning to the boy and a comment that the next step is involving his parents. Always trust your instincts!! Keep me posted...
Dear Vicki,
I feel so simpatico with you and your endeavors to steer our young women into the world with morals and self respect. I have a 15 1/2 year old daughter who is doing great dodging the status quo in a catholic girls school. Recently a friend of ours who is working on the film version of Twilight gave her the first book in the series. (By Stephenie Meyer (sic): the cover of the book is a delicate woman's hands cradling an apple.) I am interested to know what you think of these trendy vampire chronicles aimed at teen girls?
Would love it if you would address this in your next blog!
I actually found your blog through a Google Alert for my name, it is also Vicki. :-) I am so glad it came across my inbox. I am a young Mom with two daughters and a son and the issue of purity is one I feel stronger about with each passing day. I am glad to have found your blog and look forward to reading your book. My oldest is only six, but I will be prepared.
Was so glad to be able to give your resources to a mom and daughter in the middle of some difficult times. Thank you for your ministry!
Hi!
I've only been blogging since Dec. 2008 so I am a novice at it. I still have a lot to learn. I stumbled across your blogsite yesterday and really love your posts. It is inspiring to learn that there are still many virtuous women left in the USA...considering that the media advertises to the contrary.
I'm not from Texas, but my mom is a true Southerner and she still says "Ya'll" (does that count as being friendly by default?).LOL! Anyway, stop by my blogsite at http://debbieschatcorner.blogspot.com/ sometime and we'll share a Cup of Java!
Wishing you a day full of the Lord's blessings!!!!
Thank you for the reality check !
You have restored my faith in mothers of daughters, having an all male family I have often found myself so frustrated with the women who found no problem with the lack of concern about virtue.
It is so encouraging to see someone called to stand up for the precious gift that virtue is .Thank you and God bless you !
Virtue is a precious gift to be treasured ,Thank you for the loving stand that you have taken to promote and preserve virtue.
I just read your book 5 Conversations and have just been introduced to your blog. Thank you so much!!!!
Stopped by today via Big Mama. I am really enjoying your archives. The 30 day shredd sounds like fun!
Thank you so much for putting your time in this blog. It is so needed. When talking to another mom about manners (for lack of a better word) and cell phone use for our teenage daughter she said, "You can't make her the poster child for good behavior!" And because I have no poker face I looked at her like she was nuts. Of course I can! As we all should strive to do, right? I'm just stunned at the parents that just throw up their hands and give up with their children once they reach puberty. Anyway, thanks for fighting the good fight! We need you out here!
Found you via We Are THAT Family and already I love your blog! Can't wait to look around more!
