Sarah Palin: Can I get a "Wow!"?

This is not intended to be a political post and had Sarah Palin been an Olympic athlete or school teacher from Dimebox, Texas, this "hockey mom" would get my recognition and applause.

From her bio on Wikipedia:

Family and personal background

Sarah Louise Heath Palin (IPA: /peɪlɪn/) (born February 11, 1964) is the Governor of Alaska, and the 2008 Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States.[1] She will be the first female Vice Presidential candidate representing the Republican Party and the second female Vice Presidential candidate representing a major political party.

Palin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, the daughter of Charles and Sally (Sheeran) Heath.[3] Her family moved to Alaska when she was an infant.[4] Charles Heath was a popular science teacher and coached track.[4] The Heaths were avid outdoors enthusiasts; Sarah and her father would sometimes wake at 3 a.m. to hunt moose before school, and the family would regularly run 5k and 10k races.[4]

Palin was the point guard and captain for the Wasilla High School Warriors, in Wasilla, Alaska, when they won the Alaska small-school basketball championship in 1982; she earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" because of her intense play.[4] She played the championship game despite a stress fracture in her ankle, hitting a critical free throw in the last seconds.[4] Palin, who was also the head of the school Fellowship of Christian Athletes, would lead the team in prayer before games.[4]

In 1984, Palin was second-place in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant after winning the Miss Wasilla contest earlier that year, winning a scholarship to help pay her way through college.[4] In the Wasilla pageant, she played the flute and also won Miss Congeniality.

Palin holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Idaho where she also minored in politics.

Her husband, Todd, is a Native Yup'ik Eskimo.[4] Outside the fishing season, Todd works for BP at an oil field on the North Slope[5] and is a champion snowmobiler, winning the 2000-mile "Iron Dog" race four times.[4] The two eloped shortly after Palin graduated college; when they learned they needed witnesses for the civil ceremony, they recruited two residents from the old-age home down the street.[4] The Palin family lives in Wasilla, about 40 miles (64 km) north of Anchorage.[6]

She briefly worked as a sports reporter for local Anchorage television stations while also working as a commercial fisherman with her husband, Todd, her high school sweetheart.[4] One summer when she was working on Todd's fishing boat, the boat collided with a tender while she was holding onto the railing; Palin broke several fingers.[4]

On September 11, 2007, the Palins' son Track joined the Army. Eighteen years old at the time, he is the eldest of Palin's five children.[6] Track now serves in an infantry brigade and will be deployed to Iraq in September. She also has three daughters: Bristol, 17, Willow, 13, and Piper, 7.[7] On April 18, 2008, Palin gave birth to her second son, Trig Paxson Van Palin, who has Down syndrome.[8] She returned to the office three days after giving birth.[9] Palin refused to let the results of prenatal genetic testing change her decision to have the baby. "I'm looking at him right now, and I see perfection," Palin said. "Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?"[9]

Details of Palin's personal life have contributed to her political image. She hunts, eats moose hamburger, ice fishes, rides snowmobiles, and owns a float plane.[10][11] Palin holds a lifetime membership with the National Rifle Association. She admits that she used marijuana when it was legal in Alaska, but says that she did not like it.[12]

Sounds like my kinda gal. Not to mention, it's kind of nice to hear the media refer to someone my exact same age as "a young, fresh face." I hope my kids take note of that one! Bravo, Governor Palin, for your commitment to values, love for God, and love of family.

Oh and as I bonus, I thought I saw a little grey streak in her bangs in one picture. I KNEW I liked her already. :)

Wow is right! Totally listened to the speach just now and she is GOOD.

SMILES all over for our northern sister!

Vicky,
Thank you for the information.
I had seen the breaking news announcement on my computer homepage at work and was wondering about her. I've never heard of Gov. Palin. I was so thankful to come home for lunch and read this on your blog. It is refreshing! & I echo the compliment since I'm very close to her age. ;)
Thank you for taking time to comment on my blog. San Antonio was so great. I can't quit thinking about it. We'll meet someday!
Love,
Valerie

I saw the news article about her nomination today, but have to be honest and say that I had never heard of her! This information is great and makes me want to research her political views further. I'm also a mother who chose to continue a difficult pregnancy and have been blessed abundantly for it! I'll be following her more as we get very close to the election! Thanks for the info!

I was excited as I heard the news late today but maybe more excited that the media got a "surprise" on the Republican party choice.

This really will be an exciting, interesting election year. May we all be on our knees.

I know that I'm getting old when vice presidential nominees are the same age as I am! Well, she's exactly 2 years older but that's close enough.
I agree that this election just got VERY interesting!

Beautiful and smart! McCain couldn't have made a better choice.

I happen to be from that 9,000 person town the Obama campaign is making fun of. I even graduated from the same high school as Palin, just a few years later. I never knew her personally. But I did live in Wasilla when she was mayor. And Wasilla isn't all that big so you pretty much know who's who. All I can say is from personal experience, Sarah is a sold-out Jesus lover!

This Alaskan-born girl is over the moon at McCain's pick - we've lived in WA for the last four years. Sarah is exactly what this country needs!

I'm saying WOW too! It's so exciting!!!

My girls(10 and 7) have been following this presidential race for sometime. When we heard the news...my oldest had tears of joy. Her words.."MOM, a girl AND a Christian!! We HAVE to pray that they are elected. We HAVE TO!!" I couldn't have said it better.

BTW- saw you from a distance in SA last weekend, but didn't get a chance to say Hi! So "Hi!"

Blessings,
stephanie

She's a "real person!" I love it. I've been telling my Husband for a while that Washington needs more "Mommies"...they know how to handle whiny, unruly boys.

I think it's SUPER!

I am psyched!

This is going to be one amazing race!

I was blessed to hear the story of her finding out her baby was Down Syndrome.....precious lady!
Life is a gift!

Jo Ann Strickland said...

I love what I've read about this lady....
except....
my concern is, who will take care of her children (one
being a newborn)? How can any person be the mom her children need and also a great governor or vice president?
One or the other will lose. I can't help but feel a bit sad for the children.

Wow, she is a neat lady and so much to admire......however, I too am stunned at who is really raising her children.....especially a precious baby? I am a working Mom so I know all about it, but I'm not in a Presidential election going all over the country, nor did I go back to work after 3 days of having my children. It makes me sad too, especially for that precious little baby.
