Pssst, Moms: Kohl's and Britney Spears are teaming up to dress your daughter!

I could hardly believe this newsflash when I read it on Dr. Laura's blog:
Kohl’s Department Store has signed a deal with Britney Spears for her to “represent” their Juniors clothing line - you know, the line for young girls. Part of this deal is to promote her music and current tour. Parents, here’s a sample of what Kohl’s sees as a great match for your daughter:
“Get Naked”
My body is calling out for you, bad boy
I get the feeling that I just want to be with ya’
Baby, I’m a freak and I don’t really give a damn
I’m crazy as a mother ‘effer’
Bet that on ya man
Get naked…would you mind?
Take it off (I took it off)
Get naked.
Her so-called “Circus” tour is highlighted on YouTube. Ya gotta love the guys in leather thongs and those tassel pasties she sports. Frankly, she makes Madonna’s Virgin tour look downright virginal.
Kohl’s Department Store must know that:
* Her first marriage lasted 55 hours.
* Her second marriage lasted a bit longer
* She posed in the nude for Harper’s Bazaar
* She flashed a naked crotch at photographers getting out of her car
* She has been busted for drug use
* She lost custody of her children because of child endangerment issues
* And on and on….just the role model for our young daughters of today. (Click here to read the rest of Dr. Laura's commentary)
What in the world is Kohl's thinking? Aside from the reasons Dr. Laura highlights in her blog post, Britney Spears is not even relevant to the target audience Kohl's is trying to reach! Most of them are too young to remember the sane and stable Britney Spears and only know of her latest escapades that drew unified cries of preteen and teen "Ewwwww, she's soooooo groooooossssss!" Not to mention, she's sooooo yesterday! If you want to sell clothes to preteens and teens, how about using someone relevant to that audience like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, or Demi Lavato? Britney's expiration date for this market was up long ago.
Look, I'm all about giving people a second chance, but Britney is on chance #5237 and not showing any intentions of cleaning up her act. If you have any doubts, consider her song on her new Circus CD entitled, "If U seek Amy." Go ahead and say that real fast and see how it comes out, okay? Let me give you a hint just in case you're still trying to figure out this mystery tongue-twister: "F*CK me."
It certainly begs the question: Who at Kohl's made this ridiculous decision to hire Britney Spears for this campaign? My guess is a board room full of old men who are completely and totally out of touch with reality. Look guys, all you had to do was pick up the receiver on your old rotary dial phone and give your tween and teenage granddaughters a call. If you had run it by them first, you might have been clued in to Britney's irrelevancy to this audience when they mumbled, "Gramp-pa, is she the one who shaved her head bald and doesn't wear panties in public? Cuz yeah, my friends and I feel real sorry for her.... I think I even saw her perfume on sale for 75% off the other day."
Or maybe Kohl's was fully aware of the risk they were taking in hiring Britney and gambling on the old marketing strategy that "there is no such thing as bad press." Quite a gamble if you ask me, especially in this economy where mom and dad are looking for any excuse to cut back on the spending. As Dr. Laura said at the end of her post: "You parents ultimately decide where your children shop and what they buy." Amen, to that, Dr. Laura. The power is with the people. As Christians, one of the most loving things we can do for Ms. Spears is to pray for her, while at the same time, close our wallets. It's time to send a message to both Britney and Kohl's that makes it clear that we will no longer be rewarding bad behavior.
UPDATE: Many of you have requested contact information for Kohl's. After posting the media relations # obtained from their homepage, my Assistant, Shawna was contacted by a Kohl's Customer Correspondence Coordinator with the following note:
Kohl's appreciates and respects the forum the Dr. Laura radio show provides the public to voice their opinion.
In regards to your recent call-to-action involving Britney Spears and the Candie's brand partnership, we respectfully ask you remove the Kohl's media relations information from your Web site and replace it with the following:
Jessica Swearingen
cscc.escalated@kohls.com
By doing so, Kohl's will be better able to serve and respond to your audience.
Thank you for your understanding.
Jessica Swearingen
Kohl's Customer Correspondence Coordinator
I have to say that I am quite impressed that Kohl's would take the initiative to provide us with a contact email address. Please be respectful and polite when emailing Jessica. :)

Don'tcha love Dr. Laura's blog? I couldn't bring myself to read this particular blog of hers, though. The whole thing makes me sick, sick, sick.
Thank the good Lord above that my daughter has only the vaguest knowledge of B.S. We won't be shopping at Kohl's for her anymore.
I love your comment about Britney Spears' expiration date. She is soooo yesterday! You are totally right about girls' reaction about her...no one respects her anymore. They're all into the other girls you mentioned. I teach 5th and 6th graders, so I'm in the "know".
Dressing in sackcloth and ashes is looking better and better....
Oh so true....this girl is OUT!
Who would want to dress in anything with her name on it?
Eeewww! Makes me think of the ex-wife character on My Name is Earl.
Trashy...
I'll echo the comments heard here but will also add that Kohl's is also completely out of touch inviting Avril Lavigne to have a clothing line there as well. Check out the lyrics to THOSE songs!
What WERE they thinking??? I am contemplating cutting up my Kohl's card and mailing it to them. This is sickening; thanks for alerting us once again!
Do you by any chance know who we can contact at Kohl's to get our message accross? I don't know if it will matter to them, but I believe that maybe it will matter to our girls for standing up.
Do you know who at Kohl's that we can get out our message about this?
I don't know if it will matter, but it could show our daughters that we can stand up for this.
Not my daughters! We are BIG believers in watching to whom we are signing on when we shop. No Britney, No Hilfiger, No Liz Claibourne. Shopping seems a lot harder, but the message is easier to send when every shopping trip reminds us to take a stand.
Please share who we should contact at Kohls to tell them of our thoughts. Our girls need to see that we are proactive when we see something wrong- and I'd like to address this with Kohls. Thanks for the alert on this one.

This is the site where the Kohl's, Candie's Only At Kohl's, and Britney Spears partnership was announced.
The site also talks about how "community values" are so important to the investors and customers of Kohl's. They have a lot of activities that focus on children's health--but it all looks like physical health issues. We need to let them know we also care about the spiritual health of our kids.
While I do not approve of the choices Britney has made for her life and I do not want her to be a role model for my daughters I do have something to say that should make us all think. If any christian claims to live a perfect life he/she is a liar. Instead of condemning we should be praying for her. We need to pray that a God fearing, Bible believing believer would be brought into her life and that God the Father would draw her to His son as His Word states. We all are in need of a Savior every day and His name is Yeshua/Jesus.
I am shocked by this. I am going to write AND call Kohl's. This is beyond insane.
Now for the happy part. Thanks for the book!! I can't wait to read it and then I'll write about it on the bloggy blog. How do I get it?
I have contacted Kohl's in the past about the lack of decent clothing for Juniors, even suggesting they offer a Chaps line for Junior Girls, as they do for boys. If enough people would contact them, maybe it would help get the point across that there is a demand for modest, trendy clothing for this age group.
I just sent me email. Everyone should. Things like that make a differnce. Their advertisements say Expect Great Things. Is this what they mean?
I totally agree that instead of condemming we should be praying. But the difference here is that if we don't speak up then we tolerate this trend, and this filters down to the rest of the world. I also believe as christians we should pray before we make the e-mails and the calls, because we must do this as a representation of Christ.
My teen daughter HATED the Avril L. line and, quite frankly, the entire Candie's line because it is too over the top. I am not sure why Kohl's does not see that a vast majority of teens just want fun clothes that are decent to wear. We have never shopped the Candies line because of the representations. Kohl's appears very out of touch with the market it is trying to reach.
I had to laugh when I read that a spokesperson for Kohl's said Britney was "Authentic and relevant."
In their reality, I am a size 4 too! HA!
Looks like I will be shopping at JCP.
I would like to say that I am shocked...but I'm not! I do not know what it will take for the world to "wake up" and realize where our children are headed...where our families are headed! Thank God there are still those who really do care!
I am a freshman in college who loves your blog, Vicki, but rarely comment. I agree whole-heartedly that Kohl's has made a disappointing mistake. Britney Spears is obviously a terrible role model; however, I do want to point out that Kohl's is generally a very family-oriented, generous company that treats its employees and customers with great respect. I worked at Kohl's for about a month and a half the summer before starting college, and I loved my time there. Thanks so much for providing the contact information and for reminding your readers to be respectful if they choose to email. I appreciate that so much, and I know Kohl's will too :)Thanks for taking the time to address this issue in such a tactful manner. God bless you and your ministry!
I wish I could forward the email I sent them. In the email they sent back informed me that Ms. Spears is a popular icon and that Kohls respected her privacy. Hah! If you pick a representative, it represents you. If she showed any changes in how she acts, she'd be a better representative, but really she's getting too old for the Jr. section.
The ladies who suggested prayer were absolutely correct, and we need to start with prayers for Britney. I'm so sorry that she still has the words of the posted song on her lips.
Does anyone know where I can take my daughters shopping? Ironically I was planning on shopping at Kohls today. My daughter's 14th birthday is tomorrow and we're in desperate need of decent clothing.
Thanks for letting me know about this situation, we're going to take some time off from shopping at Kohl's.
Dear Vicki,
I emailed Kohl's and this is the response that I received:
Dear Valued Customer:
Thank you for contacting Kohl's about our selection of Britney Spears as the 2009 Candie's Girl. We regret that you have concerns regarding this decision.
Ms. Spears is an international celebrity and pop culture icon who embodies the spirit of the Candie's brand and personifies the iconic Candie's Girl; self confident and stylish. We respect Ms. Spears' right to privacy, and her personal life does not reflect the views of Kohl's Department Stores.
It is not our intent to offend our customers, and your feedback will be shared with Kohl's Executives for future decisions. We value the opinions of all our customers and appreciate you taking the time to contact us.
Sincerely,
Erica K.
Representative
Clearly, Candie's needs to be made aware of the disappointment. Doesn't look to me as though Kohl's really cares about our opinion though.
Thought I'd share.
Many blessings,
Vicki:
I've recently come across your sight and will be mentioning it on my next blog post. I'm putting together a list of resources that I have found helpful during my 20 years of parenting as it pertains to purity in the household. My last two posts addressed the issue with much response, including questions.
Thanks for all you're doing to carry the banner of purity in the home. It cannot always be an easy one to carry.

Thanks so much for alerting us! I just emailed Kohl's and (nicely) voiced my opinion. They are my FAVORITE store and I really hope they reconsider this. I told them that as much as I like their clothes and love their sale prices, I love my daughter infinitely more. I wonder how much email poor Jessica will have in her inbox tomorrow. ;-)
So disappointing- my husband and I are so exhausted with the struggle to raise three teens in today's insane culture. I have never contacted a company before on something like this but I am going to start speaking up-if we as parents don't stand up for decency and good values than who will? So, Kohl's got an email from me and I am mailing a letter to our local store manager.
Bless Miss Jessica's little heart. I bet she is squirming in her fashionable britches! How in the world do you truly justify the outcries of all these mothers? Hopefully, she'll present these emails (mine included) to someone who will reverse this decision. We can be good stewards of our clothing budget and still get good, current clothing without advertising Miss Spears pitiful image.
Here is the response I received from Kohls

As a celebrity, she gave up her right to privacy and when she throws it out there in the public's face she's not exactly looking for privacy.
Thank the good Lord my daughters couldn't care less about the tag on their clothes. As my 13 year old said, "clothes are clothes, it doesn't matter what brand they are." Modesty is all she is worried about. She attended a Pure Freedom conference in the 5th grade. When she realized that what she wore could cause boys to have sinful thoughts, she was struck straight in her heart. To this day she is very aware of what she wears. I don't have to say a word.
I work for Kohl's, and I can't believe the company wants anything to do with Britney Spears!
what is kohl's thinking or better yet are they even thinking at all? If they are wanting to make money in such rough economic times why have someone like Britney to represent one of there clothing lines? Ive always been told a customer is always right & I think I'm right on this, it will hurt kohl's. Please lose her or your alot of your customers!!!!!!!!!!
I use to work at Kohls (use to being the dominent word). As a Christian I can no longer live with myself when I was responsible for the Visual aspect of the store and dressed the Candies manniquins that MS Spears will be representing. NO MORE! I have had it with Kohls tongue in cheek responses to mine and countless others with any moral values. They simply do not care and it is way time to demonstrate the power of the press. I too received the plastic response gotten by many who wrote them. But then that is what they are all about. PLASTIC! Please keep up the screaming but not just to these blogs. Call your newspapers and news stations and all the talk shows you can. Oprah has always been interested in the values of young girls. Let's get her to listen. I can guaruntee you they will sit up and listen if she jumps on the band wagon. Kudos Vickie. Thanks for being a warrior for our daughters. Sincerely...Outraged
