On your mark, get set ... Shred!

UPDATE: (April 21, 2009): Fellow Shred-heads, wow! Who would have thought that nearly 100 of you would join me in the 30 Day Shred challenge? I am planning to post next week and check in on YOUR progress. It's not too late if you want to join us!

Shredding is what you do to a head of lettuce on Taco night or with your important documents before you take them to the curb, right? Silly, naive me. I had no idea that the human body could be shredded. Allow me to introduce you to my new BFF (who for the record, has no idea that I even exist), Jillian Michaels. She is the fitness guru behind a workout DVD called "30 Day Shred." The title alone is enough to make you cringe in fear and consider clicking off this post faster than you can say "ab crunch."

If you watch "The Biggest Loser," Jillian's name may be familiar to you. She is one of the team trainers who whips her team into tip-top-drop-to-the-floor-for-500-push-ups-or-die kind of shape. I don't watch the show, so I had no idea who she was until I was researching workout DVD's a few weeks ago. Ignorance was such bliss back then. Jillian's, 30 Day Shred just so happened to be the #1 ranked workout DVD on Amazon.com, so I clicked through to read a handful of the 900+ glowing reviews. The main selling point for me was that the workout was only 20 minutes long. Twenty minutes for thirty days; I mean, who can't do that, right? (Pardon me for a minute while I take a couple of Advil tablets and grab a heating pad to place on my aching muscles. I'm on Day 11, so please be patient.)

Well, obviously I clicked "Buy Now" and even more shockingly, I fed it into the DVD player the day it arrived in the mail. It has been a goal of mine for quite sometime to expand my daily workout beyond my standard trek to the mailbox to get the mail each day. Well, unless temperature tops 90 degrees and then of course, I drive the 400 yards. I wouldn't want to break a sweat or anything. All that to say, if I can do this workout, so can you. I've skipped a few days here and there due to my travel schedule, but folks, I'm here to tell you that I LOVE this workout.

In a nutshell, it combines strength, cardio, and abs into three, six-minute circuits sandwiched in between a warm-up and a cool-down. There are three workout levels to choose from and I stuck with Level 1 for the first 10 days. The DVD claims you can "lose up to 20 pounds in 30 days," but losing weight is not my goal. My aim is rather, to improve my health by getting my endurance level and heart rate up, so I'm not out of breath when I bring the groceries in from the car or run to my gate at the airport.

As a bonus, I would love to tone up, since I spend a good part of the summer at our lake house and on a boat. (Translation: Swimsuit season is fast approaching, people.) And if those reasons weren't enough to spur me on, seeing this image of Valerie Bertonelli pushing 49 and wearing a bikini on the cover of People Magazine may have done the trick. (Note: This is not an endorsement for the string bikini, nor do I plan to unveil my results in a similar fashion on the cover of Today's Christian Woman, so please refrain from sending mean comments.)

Folks, I know I sound like an infomercial, but the results I have had with this workout are nothing short of amazing. My energy level is up, my arms and legs are looking toned, and overall, I just feel better about myself. As if that wasn't reward enough, my son (age 16) walked in while I was "shredding" a few nights ago and said, "Mom, you have abs!" Now, let me tell you something -- at my age, that comment ranks right up there on the list of the boy's most endearing comments, including "Mom, when I grow up, I'm going to marry you" (age three) and "Mom, you're my kinda woman" (age six). I plan to write this one in his baby book so it is forever immortalized. Anyway, my only regret is that I didn't discover this workout DVD sooner. Which is why I'm telling you about it because we're friends. And friends don't keep secrets like this to themselves.

I plan to continue the workout beyond the 30 days, but will spread it out to 3-4 days/week. Which is why I'm blogging about it, because I would love to invite you to join me in the 30 Day Shred challenge. Whether you just need to tone up, lose some weight, or both, this is your opportunity. If you're interested in joining me, just comment below and say so. We don't all have to start on the exact same day, but it would be fun to check in every 10 days or so and report on our results. Maybe I'll even come up with a cute little 30 Day Shred widget to put on our blogs. I don't have time to go to the gym with friends, so it would be nice to have my blogging friends as virtual workout buddies. RSVP if you're in.

Here is a link to the DVD on Amazon.com. It retails for $8.49. You will also need hand-weights (2-5 lbs). I opted for 5 lb. weights and saw pretty quick results on my arms as a result.

Ok... I'll do it! The Lord has been covnicting me left and right that I need to do something to stay fit! I turned fourty this year, and my arms flap when I put on my mascara! UGG! Maybe this is the tool I've been waiting for. :-) Thanks for sharing it with your friends.

PS: my daughter and I will be at the event this weekend in E-town KY. Looking forward to it, and praying for you and the team...

Girlfriend! You already are working it here in this pic! ( I mean that in a positive sense!). Nate and I do P90X...it's absolutely killer. Hands down the toughest work-out I have ever done in my life, and this former dancer, gymnast, cheerleader has been through quite the number. Maybe I can check this one out to see if it's more doable for me. We barely get through half of the hour long sessions they're so intense!

Has she screamed, "I don't care if you cry, puke or die .. you will finish!!!???" She's a force to be reckoned with! BTW, you really should watch the show! In the midst of reality t.v. hogwash (that I am totally bought into, sad to say), it's good family television. We watch it as a family every Tuesday night. American Idol takes a dvr backseat to it! And we cry every week! Reminds me of when my family used to watch "Little House on the Prairie" on Monday nights and when Pa cried, we all cried. Now we are crying at the emotion behind changing your life.

Anyway, have a great day!!!

I actually bought this DVD a while back, and did my first day while the kids had their "quiet time" upstairs. It was great, but I haven't done it since. Now I have some extra motivation! I'm in. Thanks for the encouragement! :)

You inspired me with your great sales pitch at staff meeting last week, and I ordered the DVD this past weekend. It's been 6 months and I've got to get serious about getting this baby weight off. I can do 20 minutes a day for goodness sakes, right?!!

I'm in...well...I think I'm in...maybe...yeah, OK. I just put the DVD at the top of my Netflix queue, so I'll have it in a few days and try it out before I commit! I have visions of purchasing yet another exercise video, consigning it to the bottom drawer, only to have it follow me around singing "Baby Come Back" like the mop in the swiffer commercial! But maybe this time will be different! I'll let you know!

Vicki Courtney said...

KM, I got it at TJ Maxx. It was $40 retail but paid $16.99! Love it.

WHEW! What a relief! Usually when I open the Virtue Alert emails I am expecting to add another self-centered celeb or left-wing business to my boycott list. As my eyes scanned the first few sentences and I saw the name "Jillian Michales" my heart DROPPED! Oh NO! Please don't tell me I have to boycott Jillian!! Glad to know this was a POSITIVE post. PS - I'm on my way to buy the DVD!!! Thanks, V!

Hmmmm... very intriguing. I've been exercising and following Weight Watchers since January, I've lost 25 pounds, but I'd love to see more results in the "toning" area. I probably won't see my abs for a while (I've got another 90 pounds to lose), but I'm game!

Thanks for the motivation. I love to watch the Biggest Loser and also have a few pounds to loose from the birth of my 13 month old. I've milked that excuse as long as I can.

Hi!
I so excited by your latest post. i have been working out for 15+ years. The last 7 I have been trying to work out as a mommy that doesn't want to spend her days at the gym while her kids are at home with a sitter. Kind of defeats the "stay at home mom" gig. I just bought the dvd and will start as soon as it arrives. My latest workouts have been proving ineffective and I need a new routine.
I also wanted to let you know that I have really enjoyed your blog. I pass it on to many others after I read it and am excited for my daughter to get old enough for us to come to an event.
My mother in law (Fern Nichols, founder of Moms In Touch) was the one who intriduced me to your blog. I love the current, update to date, trendy, and godly persepctive you give. Thank you for being such a valuable resource!
I do a blog for our family as well. It is www.thenicholsloosechange.blogspot.com
Blessings to you!

i already have the dvd's and i also got her other two work outs - trouble zones and speeding up metabolism. i started it but strained my hip flexor (doing something else) so i need to lay off for a bit. y'all enjoy the results! jillian is a great trainer! btw, vicki, i work in youth ministry and w/ girl ministry specifically and i am always encouraged and well informed by following your blog. THANK YOU SO MUCH. i'm having a mother & daughter day retreat this Saturday and prayer is appreciated! i'll have to ask how you do this because i only have 3 PAIRS showing up. though i'm not all about numbers, it's hard because many of these girls don't want to spend time with their mothers. *sigh* i was once there. =p ok, take care!

Ok, I'm in. I already walk most days of the week, but I'm plateaued and need a boost. I definitely need the weight training and ab work. I once had such great abs that my gynecologist remarked on how firm they were during my check-up - a little awkward but flattering! But now I think I've lost it. Maybe this will help me get back in shape. I'm (I think) the same age as you and just want to be healthy and in shape for my after-kids-life. I always like things like this better when I know other people are doing it to. I know I can count on you to be faithful!

Some of the reviews I read on Amazon mentioned that Jillian cussed during the workouts. Vicki, can you give us more of an idea about that? I don't want to order the video and then find out that I can't do it when kids are around. Thanks!

I've already "shed" 25 lbs since last August. Now I'm ready to "shred!" Love that Jillian!

Vicki Courtney said...

Jenny, I don't recall anything except maybe her using the word a** very briefly, but keep in mind that I've been camped on level 1, so I can't address the other levels.

One thing I do is turn the sound down some and watch the news or listen to iTunes in the background. After a few days, you get the drill down and don't really need her coaching cues. That's probably why I don't notice if she's cussing!

As I was doing my Tae Bo VHS workout today, I was thinking I would like something different, but something that wouldn't take too long. Vicki, please don't use airbrushed magazine pictures as our motivation to get in shape. I'm trying to teach my daughter to learn the truth and not measure herself against these lies, and I'd appreciate it if we didn't have to either. Thanks!

I've followed your blog for awhile and really enjoy it, but have never been one to comment on anything - until now! This DVD really got my attention. Vicki -

I am glad to see you found Shred. I am a regular at-home exerciser who uses DVD's to stay fit. I have a huge personal fitness DVD library but it gives me variety and motivation to workout at least 5 days a week. I agree with you - Jillian has inspired many with Shred and now her latest offerings. Should you desire variety, you really should check out the other wonderful instructors out there, including Kelly Coffey-Meyer who has a "30 Minutes to Fitness" workout series and is currently preparing to film 2 more in her series. There's also Cathe Friedrich (a favorite of mine!!!), Leslie Sansone and others who can inspire you to keep on getting fit. Keep on SHREDding it!!!

Thanks for the tip - I just placed my order...on my way to dig through my daughter's room for the weights! You're a dearheart!

Okay, I'm in too! I never met an exercise video I didn't like--and I need variety to stay interested! I'm fairly fortunate in that I am pretty small to begin with, but bearing four children has taken its toll on my midsection--it's definitely not toned! Here's hoping Jillian can change all that!

I went and bought it today and just got finished! I went on WW back in October and lost 20 pounds. I wasn't out of my weight range for my age and height, I just didn't feel good. I took it one day at a time and was successful. I changed a lot of my eating habits and have a changed my lifestyle that way. So next on my agenda was exercise. I started walking and getting on my Elliptical about a month ago but then I read your Shred blog. My arms hurt while I am typing. I am always puzzled by the paradox that I detest the thought of exercise but always feel great after doing it. I am hoping to stick with the exercise portion since I have changed my eating habits. Your post was just the push I need. Keep posting so I will be encouraged! Be my Barnabas, Vicki!!!! You look great in your pic by the way!

Hi- I haven't written to you before but I want to let you know that I read your posts and get wisdom form them. I have 4 daughters 15, 13, 9, and 5 (and 2 sons) so I am in great need of counsel on raising them!
The reason for this note is to let you know that I was inspired by your recommendation on this "shred" video. I am about 25 lbs overweight, 41 years old, 6 kids and I have a tear in the tendon of my right foot. I bought the video anyway, thinking I could probably do quite a bit of it even though I'm in a walking cast. I did my first workout about ten minutes ago (puff, puff!) and I really think I can get a lot of work done with it(even with my 20 month old son crawling over me and laughing at me doing my crunches!)
Thank you for the inspiration.
Blessing to you,
Merry

I love this video because who doesn't have 20 min a day, right? so there are no excuses! But I will say it is very intense!

Sallie said...

Ok...ordered it and did my first one today. Pretty good! I can NOt do jumping jacks any more! We'll see if it gets easier!

Christine said...

I saw your comment & ordered it. I'm in! I got it today & tried it tonight and am so sore!!! I'm 49 and menopause is no fun! Need a motivator to get into sundresses & shorts this summer! Thanks for the tip

I'm in, Vicki! I leave for a mission trip to Capetown, South Africa on May 28th, so this will be my physical prep! Booyah! :)

I have been doing this off and on from my televison On Demand on exercise TV. You only get the first two sessions and those are hard...I can only imagine level three. You've convinced me to order the DVD and follow along for stage three. Jillian's "Boost your Metabolism" and "No More Trouble Zones" are close to an hour long and they are TOUGH! But, like one of the other respondents said...you hate it and love it at the same time. I am exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. I feel like I have done something for myself that helps me be a better wife, mother and friend.

Tammy said...

It's free on demand and it's a great workout...much more challenging than my usual yoga routine! Thanks!

Jennifer said...

I am anxiously awaiting this to arrive in the mail and then I am in if it is not too late!

I love the accountability idea of doing this with other women and following and cheering each other on!
I am trying to get into better shape to take our youth group on a hike up the mountains(PUFF PUFF) in Colorado!

Yay! Thanks for doing this! Been doing on-demand Exercise TV, too, but this DVD is great! A little late in joining but can't wait to see results! ^_^ Thanks again.

My daughters and I are on the team. We finished our 4th workout at 6a.m. this morning before school! Thank you for the recommendation and the accountability. We are looking forward to more healthy, toned bodies...after all we need to be intentional about taking care of His workmanship!!

I am on day two. I'm in for the 30 day challenge!! :)

Kati Koenig said...

So excited!! I bought this video earlier this month and it's AWESOME!!! My kids like trying to do it too. But I need the accountability to stick with it. So this is perfect!!! (Not to mention the whole blog thing is a mystery to me so maybe I can learn a thing or two this way :) ).

I finally got the DVD and had my first "Shredding Session". I have to agree with the lady who said you love it and hate it at the same time! I'm not as sore since I was doing a couple of other tapes twice a week. But, I can't imagine what level 3 must be like! My legs were like Jell-O for about 20 minutes afterwards, and I agree it's Intense. She is very motivational!! I'm so glad I got this challenge from Vicki - I'm 46 and I lost 27 lbs in the last few months - now I want to get at least 7 more pounds off and I love the feeling of strength that this work out gave me last night!

Vicki - the timing is perfect...I am currently in my second week of Ron Williams Faith & Fat Loss detox program...so count me in, maybe I can even get my daughter into it :-). Joni

I'm with y'all, too. Just got the DVD in the mail via Netflix yesterday, so I'm doing day #1 today. Can't wait to see all the changes from everyone.

Great to have so much accountability as well. I'm in!!

I'm in for the 30 day challenge. Did my first workout this a.m....my legs were like limp noodles when I was done. But I'm excited about toning and feeling better in only 30 days. Thanks for letting us know about such a great tool.

Vicki: The day after I read your blog re the Shred DVD my 15 yr old daughter came to me and asked if I wanted to start working out with her? I couldn't turn down the offer and she asked what program we should use. I mentioned your blog and since we are both avid Biggest Loser fans, we ordered the DVD that night. It came in today's mail and I can't wait to start this important health improvement with my daughter! What a blessing, and you are quite the salesperson! We are in.

tricia said...

okay. I'm in...reluctantly...but in nonetheless. :) I've tried all kinds of workout videos in the past - None that I would ever call "fun", so I am intrigued!

Denise said...

I ordered the video the day I got your blog! Thanks for the link. The video got here yesterday...so the shredding will begin today!

Any other guys on here?
I feel quite alone.
Started the shred with my wife last night and can't straighten my arms today. Loved it!

Well I am a week behind, but I have just ordered my DVD and can't wait to get started! I hope my old knees will make it!

Thanks for promoting a healthy lifestyle & exercise for Christian woman. When I am at women's conferences, I am alarmed at the unfit, unhealthy women I see. God has called us to be self-disciplined & that includes watching what we eat & getting enough exercise so that we are fully capable of doing all that He has planned for our lives.

I'm in! Just received my DVD in the mail yesterday(you should get royalities for advertising :)!). I am trying to talk two more friends into it, also. Thanks for the pep talk. Great blog, BTW!

I'm in. After an additional sales pitch this past weekend and seeing your own results, I'm definitely on board.

I would love to join if it isn't too late.

Oh. My. Word.

Got my DVD in the mail yesterday, and during my daughter's naptime stuck it in to try out level one. Gracious, woman, I woke up this morning feeling like I'd been hit by a truck!! I knew I was in trouble when I was getting sore before going to bed last night, and especially when achy legs worked their way into my dreams all night long! LOL!

By the way - I'm going on a Study Tour of Israel with Kay Arthur and the Precepts team in a couple of weeks, and Shred is coming with me!! =P

Christine said...

Day 4 & I am beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel! My arms & legs are not soooo sore and I can start to see results! Yee Haw!!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for sharing this. I really needed something new to get going. Started this morning...I will be at level one for a while but it is a start.

Julie said...

Just call me the shredstress. The dvd arrived and day one is complete, only 29 to go. I am doing it with a great friend. Love a little accountability! I even ordered two sets so we have no excuse for being shredding slackers. If we can't get together for a day of torture, we are on our own. BTW, did I mention we already have sore legs? Surely we will shred a layer or two. Who knows...we might even find a muscle by May....

I'm in! Just finished Day 2 of the 30 Day Shred. OUCH. (It gets better, doesn't it. Please say it gets better.)

I must admit that I am slightly scared about the pain that is evidently coming, but I got my video in the mail yesterday and my 15 year old daughter and I plan to start shredding today.

Thanks for this info. I ordered the workout & absolutely love it. I considered myself in pretty good shape (I run 5 miles a day & do some toning), but I don't think that any more. It hurts to type! It's worth it!

Mary R Snyder said...

I'm in!! Heard about it from a friend on Twitter.....

robin schmitt said...

Oh, my goodness! My daughter and I just finished day 1 and my arms feel like noodles. I knew I wasn't in good shape, but now I REALLY know it. I had a bad ankle injury 6 months ago (3 displaced fractures, torn ligaments, and a sprain) and wasn't sure how my ankle would hold up for the workout. There were a couple of things that didn't feel so good on my ankle, but I did lower impact than suggested to keep from aggravating it. My ankle feels a lot better than my arms do at the moment. ;) I can't wait to see how much better I feel in a month.

GaylynnMomof1 said...

Hi again, I got through 4 days of the DVD and then took Sat and Sun off. I have to say that after the 2nd day I felt the worst. By day 4it wasn't nearly as bad. I feel a lot stronger and I am definitely going to continue with it. I even got my 11 yr old daughter to do it with me and she likes it too.

Chas said...

Ok. I just retrieved the DVD from the mailbox. If I can manage to crawl to the computer tomorrow I'll keep you posted!

I'm a little late with the commenting, but I am in, along with every friend I have. I'm on Day 5 and FEELING THE BURN.

I've just finished day 3 and I think I'll actually be able to do this one. As long as I can roll out of bed, stumble to the DVD player and finish before anyone else gets up. LOVE that it's only 20 minutes and that you don't stay on any one exercise for more than 1 minute tops. Thanks for the motivation, Vicki!

Just found out about the challenge, and ordered the DVD!

Just thought I'd comment and let you know that today was my day 2:) Probably won't be blogging about it, but am posting updates on fb! I'm trying to lose some old baby weight;) Thanks for the encouragement to buy the dvd!

robin schmitt said...

I hope the person that said that day 2 was the hardest was right. Yesterday was my first day and today was definitely harder because I was sore from yesterday. I'm looking forward to day 3 tomorrow. :)

Why do I even bother posting at comment number 151 is beyond me ... [grins] it's kinda like shouting into a jet engine really. But, there is something accountable about putting this information "out there". Living in Australia, I am still waiting for my dvd; hopefully it will play on my puter if not my tv. I am also not looking to loose weight but to gain strength. My legs are getting a little wobblier and my day a little more fetigued. I want to have all I need physically to enjoy all my kids; the tots and overteens. I was looking for a strength dvd when I stumbled over your post .... maybe a God thing. Here's to lookin after what he gave me ....."}

You've motivated me enough to finally take it out of it's packaging. Mine is from Netflix, we've had it for 2 months, my husband is getting ready to divorce me because we are only receiving 2 out of the 3 movies Netflix normally sends, due to my refusal to send it back. The day has come for me to do this. I am scared.

I saw your challenge on BooMama's site and decided to step up my routine a notch. I already try to walk 2-4 miles 3 times a week, but toning would be great too. We'll see...

I came to the challenge through Boo Mama's blog and I am in. I just finished Day 1! It's going to be rough, but fun! Thanks for the challenge!

I want in on this challenge... is it too late???

robin schmitt said...

I think day 3 was a tiny bit easier than day 2 and today my legs don't hurt as much as the last two days. My daughter and I will be doing day 4 today. After day 1 my ankle (badly broken 6 months ago) was hurting quite a bit and I didn't know if I would be able to continue, but on days 2-3, although it hurt some during a couple of the exercises, it didn't hurt after I was finished. Yeah! Once I had decided to do this I really didn't want to have to postpone it to wait for my ankle to heal more.

Ann said...

We got the tape yesterday-- and did day one. I was really great. My daughter and I will be on this shred together. Thanks for the challenge. The 20 minutes went by fast. Day two may be different...

robin schmitt said...

This is what I thought:

Day 1 - hard
Day 2 - harder (sore from day 1)
Day 3 - a little easier than day 2
Day 4 - a little easier than day 3

I was very encouraged today (day 4) that I am beginning to notice a difference in my strength and endurance.

I got my DVD yesterday!! Sign me up. I just have one question...I had knee surgery in Late Feb and some of the lunge/squat things REALLY hurt my knee even doing the lighter version. I'm just doing other things while she does those so my heart rate doesn't slow down.Ya think that's okay??It't gotta beat sittin' on the couch with a bag of M&M's

Elizabeth said...

I got my DVD last week. I was so sore after the first day that I couldn't even sit down! It's a good workout and 20 min is about how long my six month old will stay in her exersaucer while I do it! Hope Jillian delivers on the
20 lbs in a month thing! I'm keeping it at 1600 calories..

psalm101 - Vicki i am reading your book and have the first two conversations wiht my precious sixteen yer old daughter. I am almost through with chapter 3 and will move forward with her too! I am like minded with you in so many of the things you say (I am also in the middle of "Raising Godly Boys in a Ungodly world")I am constantly "amening" you! I so wish you would come a do a mom/girl seminar in Huntsville Alabama! As for the give away I would like to have it for my church and Lord willing maybe even lead the study.

Calista, I think you're doing the right thing. I had ankle surgery in October (have a plate and 8 screws) and am having to baby my ankle somewhat, but I'm definitely getting a good workout. M&Ms are good, but they're not nearly as good for you as this workout. :)

Just finished day 4. And I only thought I was in shape prior to beginning! It's getting easier, though. Was able to complete every single rep today. Good luck to everyone!

I'm shredding too...though I've been on 3-4 days a week for the last two weeks. I plan to step it up next week (classes and finals are over!) and go on a spiritual shred too...details at my blog (http://mstheophilus.blogspot.com)

I'm late but definately in! This is so exciting!!! I started this same workout DVD about 2 weeks ago but discontinued after just 1 week for reasons unbeknownst to even me. Came across your blog and somehow found my will to shred again!

I JUST found your blog tonight, but have been doing the 30 Day Shred for about 2 months now and have TOTALLY seen results! It is amazing!

confusedseeds said...

Thanks for this! I saw the link to this post on a friend's blog.

Started toward the end of May. Now on Level 3. I must say 3 is better than 2 in my opinion---or maybe she just whoops your hind end so much in 1 and 2 that 3 is not as intimidating...

Lots of results! No number-weight loss beyond one or two lbs yet, but inches lost all over. Shweet!

IStandAmazed said...

I ordered the DVD from Netflix. It'll get here Monday afternoon. Then I'll be counting how many days I've shredded and cutting way back on sodas. I wish I could've started when all of you did, but I was recovering from a foot injury. I still have the same foot injury, but not nearly as bad. (No, I'm just recovering from and arm injury as well, and may not get to do all 30 days because I may have surgery on my arm.) If that happens, I'll just recover as fast as I can so I can get started on the 30-Day Shred. That will be my motivation to get better.
