Shred-head update and Level 3 commentary!

Let me start this post by sharing that all three of my kids harassed me mercilessly about posting the pictures above. My daughter poked fun at my workout skort with a sarcastic, "Mom, what in the world are you wearing? She then added insult to injury when she asked if I could crop myself out of the picture on the left and send her just Scout. My oldest son took one look at my talking cartoon bubbles (a proud design moment, btw) and simply said, "Mom, sometimes I feel bad for you." Next up was my youngest son who upon seeing the pictures said, "Are you sure you want your readers to know how weird you are in real life?" Seriously, what is wrong with my children?!

And on that note, allow me to introduce my newest blog readers to Scout-the-wonder-pup, who also happens to be my biggest (littlest?) Shred supporter. As you can see, Scout was there to cheer me on when I graduated to...are you ready for this? Level 3 for the first time! Never mind that it took my body two full days to recover before I could attempt it again. Last night was my 5th time to do Level 3 and I am now over the hump. For those of you who are just now tuning into my Shred journey, I have completed the full 30 days (Level 1 for the 20 days, Level 2 for ten days). My goal in the aftermath of the 30 Day Shred is to do Level 3 (every-other-day) and sometimes incorporate Level 1 or 2 on the off days. The one time I tried doing Level 3 for two days in a row, I felt a strong temptation to cuss at my television set and curse Jillian Michaels, so I guess you could say that I'm fleeing the temptation.

That said, here are a few random thoughts regarding my overall assessment of level 3:

  • Those of you who posted comments saying that level 3 was not any harder than level 2 (in your opinion), are either A) delusional, B) much younger than me, C) in much better shape than me, or D) all of the above.
  • The following day, it was painful to sit, stand, or lie down for extended periods of time. Translation: I hobbled around, whined incessantly to my family members, and popped the maximum number of Advil tablets allowable per day. When there was little improvement on the second day, I suggested that my husband call our pastoral care minister at the church to see if we qualify for the meals ministry. It was certainly worth a try.
  • When Jillian made this comment during the dreaded Superman move: "If you're following our 30 Day Shred, you should be seeing that six-pack right about this time," I wanted to crawl through the TV set and slap her silly. Um, earth to Jillian, for those of us who have birthed multiple children and are pushing 50, the closest we will come to seeing a six-pack is on the drink aisle at the local supermarket.
  • The move that looked easy, but proved anything but: Scissor crunches. Mercy. Muscles I didn't even know existed were screaming in pain.
  • Rockstar jumps: There are no words for this. You would think that my cheerleader days would have put me at an advantage, but such was not the case. I had to sit out on the 2nd set. Besides, I needed the 30 second break to wipe up the sweat that was pouring off my body and spritz my face with the kitchen sink sprayer.
  • Jumping lunges, aka: "jump training." I am convinced that this will be a required workout move in Hell's Gym. All the more reason to pause right now and make sure you are right with God. I don't normally endorse scaring folks into the gates of heaven, but the thought of round-the-clock circuits of jump lunges with no ability to lower the thermostat just might be incentive to get saved. I found it interesting that Jillian referred to this move as an "eccentric contraction." Having birthed two of my three children naturally, I will have to admit that by the final jump lunge on the second set, I was pondering which type of contractions were in fact, more painful. And yes, I would definitely recommend Lamaze breathing while doing jump lunges.
Next week, I will post another Shred-head update and the results of both my sons' first-ever attempt at doing the Shred workout, starting with Level 3 (pictures and possible clip included). Mind you, one of them plays three sports and works out regularly. The other one has been talking smack for weeks about how effortless the workout looks and bragging that he could easily master it, starting at Level 3. Suffice it to say, I called his bluff and feel vindicated.

Now it's your turn. How are you doing?

Today is day 21 and I moved to level 2 a week ago. My two youngest children watch and like to "shred" after I do. My four year old wanted to see level 3 and after watching said, "Mommy, that's hard!" She doesn't think we will be able to do that one. :) My goal is to finish the 30 days at level two and then move on. I'm am seeing a huge difference in my body and my husband is noticing too!
And, I agree that natural childbirth was easier than this at times!

Congrats on moving on to Level 3!

I am still in Level 1. I just can't bring myself to move on until I can make it through everything without stopping.

The pounds are not leaving me as I hoped they would by adding just the exercise so I guess I will have to change my eating habits after all!

Keep posting - You are very encouraging!

Well...I'm on day 25 and have lost inches every where except my thighs and belly. BUT I can FEEL change is coming. I'm on level 2 and still can't complete level 2 all the way. Tell me to keep it up and it will be worth it!

My comment actually has nothing to do with this post, but I was just wondering if you were aware that Brooke Shields came out and said that she regrets promoting staying a virgin when she was younger and wishes she would have "gotten it over with" before age 22. UGH! There was a small article about it today in my local paper (The Denver Post) and I thought it sounded like something you would be interested in reading about.

I'm on day 13 of level 1 and still doing it every other day with running 2 miles on those other days. Like another comment, I don't want to move up to level 2 until I am able to fully complete all of level 1. There are a few times in the cardio segment that I just have to slow down for a few seconds. I continue to see improvement in endurance so perhaps by day 20 or so like you Vicki I can move up. I'm just so thrilled to be sticking with it and seeing results. I've lost a total of 6.5 inches (bust, waist and hips)and have gone down a size in my clothes!! Definitely motivated!! Please keep posting your updates. It's encouraging and I refer back to your posts (and the comments) to get a sense of what I should expect and any tips.

My favorite quote right now from level 1 is "If you think you're gonna die, stay with Anita. She'll carry you through." I crack up every time!

Scout the dog completes the total picture.

I'm on day 30 give or take a few missed days. I never though I would make it through the first week!! I can't believe the results I am seeing. I am losing inches in the waist and building great tone in my arms. I am tickled to see my tummy tone. Being one year past forty, this is the first workout that has provided the best results.

My husband and girls only lasted a couple day with the workout. My cats have been my best supporter throughout this ordeal. Tonight I am going to move to level 2. My husband has benifited from my new found confidence in my body.

Thank you Vicki for this great find. Also, I am praying for your ministry. Discovering your web site has truly been a God -send for me and my darling daughters.

God bless you,
Nicole

I love it!! I am also envious of all you "shredders"! I am recovering from acl knee surgery, so I have been sitting around the past few weeks. It will be a while before I can shred.

LOL - your kids should count their blessings that their mom is so fit and youthful!

And don't know why you are moaning in the 3rd bubble about your abs - you're looking mighty svelte!

Don't know why, but I have a sneaking suspicion that pastoral care person might have laughed. . . . Especially since ordering from a menu doesn't require the use of your abs! Although I'm sure that person is generally quite caring and sympathetic.

Amanda said...

Uh, you look amazing. Seeing is believing. I am ordering it right now.

I've contemplated getting the Shred video, but my hesitation comes with I had a multi-level lumbar disk fusion in February, and I wonder whether this would be too much for me. (Don't worry I'm not asking for you to answer that question for me!) I'm doing great and have finished physical therapy, so I may have to check this out after all.

Congratulations on level three! You sure have motivated me!

I am still on level 2 and find myself still yelling at the TV and not wanting to do those twist jumps! UHG! But, I am hoping to get brave and move to level three soon! I am finding I have seen a difference in my ams and abs but really wanted to see more change in the legs. Maybe level three will kick that area into gear! :) Thanks for telling us all about this! I have SEVERAL friends who have started it also!

Becky said...

I am 24 days into it and wish I saw more pounds dropping from the scale and I am also wishing that I would have measured before I started. I have missed some days and am still on level 2. I had a "hip injury" (which makes me sound 95 rather than 33) and took 4days off which was a bummer.

I tried level 3 yesterday and had the same compulsion to cuss. I stopped after 15 minutes I am ashamed to say and headed back to level 2 today. I agree it is MUCH harder! BTW "Hell's Workouts" HYSTERICAL!

Congrats on your success and ignore those teenagers because you look adorable. I am suddenly thankful that my 2 year old boys have such a limited vocabulary :)

Abby said...

The Lord has ordained you to speak the truth, and oh my, Level 3 is everything you say and more!

Thanks for getting all of us on the bandwagon with you! As hard as it is, I'm loving the results!

Smelling Coffee said...

You go, girl! I bet your boys will change their tune soon. :-)

Proud to say I've started... level one, of course... but can already tell a difference! Been sick, had to take a break on day 5 - right when I started feeling like I was getting the hang of it. Will start back in the morning. Actually have missed it these past several days off! Amazing!!!

Rebekah said...

You are great! :) And by the way, I happen to like your outfit! :) Whats a blog for if you cant take fun pictures! So did Scout get a walk? :) lol

Patty said...

I think you look fabulous, Vicki! It's so cool to see you doing those same moves. I'm only a year younger than you and definitely not in good shape, but I stand by my original comment that I think level 3 is easier than level 2. Maybe it's just my assorted joint pains that don't do well after a level 2 workout. After doing level 1 for 12 days and level 2 for 2 days, I've completed my 30 days on level 3 and continue to do level 3 every other day or so. I've lost 5pounds and my clothes fit better, but I didn't measure myself before I started. The only thing that I cannot stand in level 3 are those rock star jumps--FORGET IT!! I just do some other cardio move when those are on. Also, I'm with Anita on the pike & Rocky situp ab moves--Natalie's an amazing woman!

Laurie said...

I forgot to add in my earlier comment that I, too, have a workout skort - several in fact - and I LOVE them!!!

Rini said...

So I know that you "graduated" from Level 1 rather quickly, but still - how could you fail to notice that Natalie is a cheater, cheater, cheater pants?!

In Level One, when doing the Lunge + Bicep Curl for the first circuit... As Jillian walks from Natalie to Anita, the camera catches a few "extra" seconds of Natalie - and SHE'S NOT LUNGING! She's just STANDING there doing the bicep curls. CHEATER, CHEATER, CHEATER PANTS!

So now I find myself yelling at the TV when we get toward the end and Jillian comments on how the girls "don't cheat, even when you're not looking." Liar!

In other news, I'm not even sore anymore! I did 4-5 days and then had to quit for a few to go out of town and camping and whatnot. Well, I went back to it and hadn't lost any ground at all; I was so thrilled! I can't quite keep up with the girls as far as speed, and I'm still using 0 weights for the squat & press torture, but my endurance is really jumping up there!

Also, you do look amazing. But I don't think I noticed a 'before' picture, so I can't actually credit Jillian for it. ;)

I have yet to work out today, but by the time I go to bed tonight, I will have completed day 13 and day 3 of level 2.

Let me just say, "eyes on Anita"!!

Vicki,
I needed to laugh today and thank you for giving me that!!!!!
You are hilarious and I love you for being real...tell your kids that.
As for my update....Life is crazy as I work PT and 4 kids are finishing school. Right now I am doing about everyother day, on about day 14 and still on level 1. And from what you have said, maybe I will go ahead & have baby #5 that I've been wanting since my oldest is finishing middle school in a week and I am sad to the core he has to start high school in August.
Anyway...can't wait to be more consistant in a week!
ps, another delay I have ~ I gave away my video....been doing it from the loca cable demand channel.

You look great! I had to stop at day 17 (2 weeks ago). I injured myself somehow. I hope to get back in the swing of things soon.

More than once I've wanted to smack Jillian. :) Thanks for the update. Can't wait to see the results of the boys doing shred with you. :)

I think you look GREAT!

I, too, am an every other day person with normal yoga/cardio in between. So I am on Day 10 out of three weeks. I have not left level 1 but am planning on it for next week. I am impressed with my strength gain, especially in my arms. I have a big six year old who loves to cuddle and it is a lot easier lifting him up to me now:-) I will keep with it as well. Thanks for the post Vicky. I read it to my husband and we both got a good laugh!

Today is day 30 for me and I'm so excited!! I told several friends and got them hooked as well. I didn't loose any weight, but feel much stronger and look toner especially in the arms and stomach (I was using 5 lb weights). I missed about 4 days in there, but I'm still going strong and hope to keep doing the video throughout the summer.

I stuck with level 1 for most of the 30 days (doing level 2 a couple times and level 3 only once). I have to let you know that after doing level 3, I pulled a stomach muscle and had to go back to level 1 it hurt so much. I also had sore knees on and off after about day 20 (anyone else have this problem?).

Thanks for sharing this video with us...I feel so much better! I also agree with your level 3 commentary. After I read the blog about level 3 being easier than level 2 I jumped right into it after only 2 days of doing level 2 (I thought level 2 was too awkward). Hmm...I wonder if she was using 5 pound weights like we were??

Congratulations on surviving level 3 several times...I hope to get there someday!!

Your fellow shredder,
Lynn

Love the picture with your dog. My dog gets so excited when I come out in my tennis shoes...he thinks it is time for a walk. Then he has a fit that I'm doing the workout instead of walking him!
Thanks for the encouragement. This has been a great workout for me.

Patty said...

Lynn,
You're exactly right that Level 2 is awkward. That's why I moved on to Level 3. I guess I equate NOT awkward with easier. Even when I'm bored with 3, I'll go back to 1 and do it all with weights (3lb not 5lb), but I never go back into Level 2. I'm with you that my knees (and elbows) are sore from all this shredding.

Christy@pipandsqueak said...

I think you look great in your skort. Where did you get it. I just started yesterday. At the time I thought it was easy but the only weights I have at home are 1 lb. walking weights. Today I was feeling it though. I need to go do my workout for today. I was unmotivated but your post has motivated me to go do it right now since the kids are in bed.

I'm on day 9 of Level 1 and already telling a big difference in my endurance.
I write a blog for a National Physical Therapy Magazine and this week was on Obesity, post 40 body changes, and the shred.
I credited you and posted your site to my blog links--okay, so the tech guys actually did that, credit where credit is due.
Here's the website to the post

Thanks for what may very well be a life changing recommendation!

What I wish:
1. That I'd measured myself when I started
2. That I'd made a note of how many days I've been "shredding"

Why it doesn't matter:
I'm seeing results regardless! I've said it before--I was what I would call a "regular" exerciser (5-6 days a week) and wasn't in terrible shape to begin with, but nothing, NOTHING was helping me to get rid of "that little pooch that I don't dig" after giving birth to four children. And now I just shake my head and wonder, "What if I hadn't read Vicki's post? What if I'd never learned about the 30-Day Shred workouts??" Gone are my "love handles," gone is the big pooch I used to have--hurray! Granted, I still have a little pooch but I am choosing to believe Jillian and know that if I am "diligent" as she says, that little pooch will hopefully soon be as flat as a pancake!

You are cracking me up with all recent post about level 3. I was falling off my computer chair!Love the comment about the 6 pack. I agree, when I heard her say that in level 3, I thought, if I'm supposed to have one by now, I'll never get a 6 pack!
Plus...
I found out I was pregnant around day 20, so I figure this baby will be 5 before I see decent abs again. I have been switching between level 1 & 2.
I can definitely tell a difference in the tone of my muscles and I don't think I'll gain near as much weight during the pregnancy if I can keep it up while pregnant.

Not sure how those plank moves will work with an 8 month belly hanging down!

Thanks for hooking us up with Jillian. I am addicted.

I think you look amazing! Way to go! I LOVE skorts! I started the 30 day shred and did a couple of days but almost everyone in my family is doing P90X so I jumped in with them and have almost completed week 3! It is tough too! Whew! Hopefully it will work! : )

Your Scout is precious! We have a Scout too... he is a little bigger... I just put a pic of him on my blog!

Have a blessed day! Emmy : )

I did a little over 30 days then went on vacation for over a week. I went back to Level 3 today. I still stick with Anita most of the time so I haven't had the agony of the jumping lunges. I noticed my knees and shins hurting so I had to get new workout shoes.

I haven't really lost any weight, but I am more toned. When I look down at my thighs I see some muscle now!

Dori in Texas said...

Well...I did level 1 for 10 days and then level 2 for 10 days and thought I was ready to move to level 3. OUCH! Went right back to level 2 for 3 days now and am working up the courage to try level 3 again. I am post 50 and always felt young for my age. Not anymore. I feel 50 alright. It's the knees.
Love your pictures, and the kid's comments. I have an empty nest, so I at least spared the teasing. Bet your kids are very proud of you. You are "lookin' good".

Vicki, Way to go girl Level three! I bet the kids are actually proud of You!

Can I just share that I am CRACKING UP over Rini's comments about Anita cheating?? I am enjoying all this humor. I took the plunge this week and bought the DVD, and did level 1 for the first time yesterday. I can hardy move my legs today, but I've begun the journey!

I'm half-way through the 30-days at level 1. I haven't "peeked" ahead and reading what some of you have said about the other 2 levels makes me content to keep it that way! I turned off Jillian's instructions one day last week, but after reading some of her quotes on here, I decided it might be good to hear some of those instructions/comments again first-hand. It really does help to hear her "push through" encouragements.

I can tell I'm getting stronger on the jumping rope, which I've thoroughly disliked as an adult. I've never liked aerobics, but since the cardio is only a total of 6 minutes, I can tolerate it (I like to "speed" walk and that's how I typically get my cardio in). I love the weight workouts and the punching but I really dislike the lateral raises with side lunges. Ugh! I find that rather awkward.

My energy level has surprised me (pleasantly), I can tell a difference in my stress level (yea!!) and the fact that the exercise length is only 20 minutes keeps me going back. I've told my children, just keep reminding me, "It's only 20 minutes, Mom!"

Today is day 7. All I can say is that I am surviving....barely! I made my husband be my workout partner. Though at first he was skeptical, those sly remarks are history! :)

I haven't exercised consistantly for 5 years and I have 30 extra pounds to prove it.

I am in week 2 of level 1. It is hard but do-able.

On a side note....I have a question. How do you maintain your tan? Is it a spray tan or out of a bottle? I would love to know the brand if it is "fake." I know that having a more tan look will help encourage me to keep up the shred.

Thank you,
Tasha

I bought the DVD and the book together. If only I had read one page of the book before day 25. Hello... Reading is knowledge. Probably could have had twice the results if I had followed her eating suggestions. I'm on day 2 of level 3...circuit one. It kills! I now go back and forth between all levels. Mixing it up can't be too bad. It's that or cry monkey.
Get the book.

I am a newbie as I am only on day four. Let me say that even on level one, I am dying. This is one of the hardest things that I have ever done. And, yes, the next day, I can harldy walk when I first get out of bed. I am loving it though and can't wait to see the results of my hard work. Also want to say that on the first day of exercising, there were four out of five of us doing it. Now on day four, it is just me. Good old mom still hanging in there. Even dad gave up. I just say, keep on keeping on.

Today was my first day of level 3,(day 27 of the 30day shred) I did better than I expected after watching level 3 yesterday, I mix it up between following Anita and Natalie.(I'm sure if I just followed N. I'd be a gonner)
I did level one for 15 days, level 2 for 11 days. I did hear Jillian mention the "D" word on level 3 and think I will look into the book that Julie M. suggested in her comment, these words as I sit here minutes after level 3 and eating two mini hershey's dark chocolate specials(and raw almonds)I shred to eat! think I'll get that book! Thanks for the encouragement! (will be shredding more than 30 days)
