Shred-head update!

Okay, I realize that I am a day late on posting the promised 30 Day Shred update. Sorry about that, but (drumroll, please...) I just finished my 30 days of shredding last night! Woo-hoo! The last five days, I ended up shredding every other night because Level 2 was beginning to take a toll on my aching body. And by "toll," I mean I was feeling pain in places that I've never felt pain before. For example, there is apparently a muscle in my left arm that has never been used before and in retaliation for being stretched beyond it's comfort zone, it made my left hand tremor for 24 hours when I would do simple things like type on a keyboard or lift my cell phone up to my ear. Oh, and on about Day 22, I had to ask my husband to give me a little shove out of the bed to start my day and had he not done so, I'm fairly certain I'd still be there at this moment.

And by the picture, you might note that I had some company on Day 27! This was my daughter's first-ever night of shredding and hey, do you recognize that expression? I bet you do! Feel free to also note how very calm I look. Never mind that my sweet daughter has been mysteriously MIA from shred workouts since this photo was taken. Level 2 was a bit much for her, so she has decided to start on Level 1 and perhaps, our shredding paths will cross someday.

And now for an update on my results after 30 days:

  • I continue to remain more energetic with no sinking spells in the mid-afternoon. In fact, it's 3:10 p.m. as I type this sentence and I'm not under the influence of an afternoon caffeine buzz, nor are my eyes propped open with toothpicks. Oh Jillian, how I love thee.

  • I continue to eat overall, more healthily. Unless, that is, there's a box of Cheez-Its in the pantry and then all bets are off. But hey, in my defense, they're made with cheese and last I checked, cheese is very good for you, thus putting my favorite snack in the dairy category.

  • I ended up only losing ONE POUND during my 30 Day Shred experience, which might seem discouraging to some, but I ended up losing inches by toning up. In fact, I can no longer fit into most of my jeans, shorts, and dress pants and I have gone down one pant/skirt size. Oh snap. Looks like I'll need to get some new clothes.

  • I just went swimsuit shopping and there was no weeping and gnashing of teeth in the dressing room. Here's a sneak peek at my new tankini (slightly different pattern) that is, hellooooo, one size smaller than my last swimsuit. (Insert Hallelujah chorus here) I actually cannot wait to wear it on the boat this weekend. There's a sentence I never thought I'd type at my age!

  • I feel more comfortable wearing sleeveless shirts now. My arms look much more toned and my children no longer tell me that I'm getting "old lady arms." Or as one of my friends calls her arms: Flying Squirrel arms. Now, there's a visual I can do without...

  • The workout got easier as I progressed and I now can do it with the sound down low while watching something else on TV while Jillian barks out commands from my laptop. But for the record, I still think planks are of the devil and that Jillian needs a new wardrobe stylist. I wish there was an option on the DVD where we could incorporate songs from our iTunes library and change her workout outfits. You know, kinda like virtual paper dolls?

  • And last of all, I can no longer imagine not working out. I plan to stick at Level 2 for while and do it at least, every other day. I hope that I can remain self-disciplined enough to continue this habit in the years to come. Just go ahead and sign me up to lead the Wednesday morning Shred chair workout when I'm a resident at the Whispering Pines assisted care facility in 2055. No cameras allowed.

So, what about you? Now, it's your turn to share an update of where you are in the workout. What day are you on? What are some hurdles you have faced? What makes you want to slap Jillian silly? Or Anita and Natalie with their washboard abs? Are you seeing results? I realize some of you may have quit or gotten off track, but let me encourage you to give it a try again. Persevere! You'll be glad you did. And if you're just now joining us on this post, it's not too late to become...a Shred-head.

P.S. Jillian if you ever happen to stumble upon this Shred-head post, please feel free to send a courtesy commission check to the address here. Or at least a personally signed DVD.

Hi Vicki! I'm new to your blog, but I, too, am a (wannabe? aspiring?) Shredder. Jillian almost killed me in the first week, but after a few weeks, it is much easier now. I don't quite have the guts to move on to Level 2 just yet, but I only do the Shred every other day (I do my elliptical trainer on the days in between). I've seen the most dramatic results in my arms and, like you, I feel much more confident in sleeveless tops now. Yay!

I was just telling my husband last night that I think our glorified bodies will look like Anita's! :)

I'm so glad that your update was today because TODAY--Day14--someone actually said I looked thinner! I went right home and did level 3 I was so excited. Actually, I think I'm going to stick with level 3 because it's not so hard on the elbows. My elbows were KILLING me after 2 days of level 2. And, while I was quite comfortable at level 1, I wasn't sweating and huffing and puffing any more so I moved on. I don't think level 3 is any harder than level 2 Vicki--give it a go! By the way--all of my shredding is done while wearing my Proverbs 4:23 bracelet! My heart is getting its spiritual AND physical exercise. Thanks for the encouragement!!

I'm on day 13 and like you, I really haven't lost any weight. I have, however, lost an inch in my waist and an inch and a half if you measure around under the armpits - you know, that squishy part that hangs over your bra. I took all my measurements before I started so I could get a good idea of what was going on.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm still with you, Vicki et al! Sticking with my "shred one day, walk the next, repeat" plan. Just tried Level 2 the other day - I pretty much hang with Anita on that one. Except for the last set of abs - by the end of that hellish Circuit 3 I can no longer get in the dreaded plank position, so I just do the bicycles like in Level 1. I'm kind of getting sick of Jillian taking a break and talking the whole time - yet she dares tell me I'm not allowed to take a break!
Not worrying about results, 'cause I know exercise=good and no exercise=no good. I must be hooked because while I was shredding today I realized I'll be gone literally all day tomorrow. The old me would have said, "Too bad - no walk today." The new me says, "Low tide at the each is 6AM tomorrow - perfect walking conditions!"

Love your new suit! I bought a new one recently and my basset hound chewed it up. Guess you could say he shredded it!

On day 8 and level 1 is still killing me! I had no idea what ridiculous shape I was in! I am going to persevere though until I can move on up! Thanks for inspiration!

I am on day 14 for me. I went 9 straight days, and then headed out of town to see my sister graduate, but got back on track yesterday.

Still on level 1, because my hubby joined me last night for shredding. Moving on to level 2 sometime this week. No real weight loss, but feel better and inches seem to be coming off, and feeling more toned.

Thanks for keeping us on track! I hope that you'll still keep us accountable.

Absolutely astounded! Everywhere I go in bloggosphere, everyone is shredding. .. well except for Warren at Bible Fountain. Talk about leadership, influence, signposting... and motivating others to inflict pain on oneself. Sheesh.

BTW, [says sandra sheepishly from the other side and down the bottom of the globe] I'm on day fourteen too [grins broadly] and agree with Patty; level three is much easier. Better workout on strength though.

What is working?
~ I can get out of an armchair without using my arms;
~ I can kick my butt; very important skill to have
~ Definately dropped a size although cant weigh myself as the scales were baptised by my baby boys in the bathtub
~ Am eating less by choice.... go figure??!!
~ Using less heating [it's winter here] as we make our own heat in the mornings
~ Can see parts of my body I only ever saw in the mirror; after ten children never thought that 'extra' skin would tighten up

Thank you Vicki for the 'tribe' journey. Chase up with another post so see how us laggers are going in a few weeks. Determined to hit 30 days.

I just started shredding last week, so on Level 1, day 7. I am definitely having a more consistent energy throughout the day.
First two days were awful!! They should be required to put a warning that fastening your own bra may become impossible due to arm pain!

I have been shredding for six days and already feel a difference! Thanks for all the encouraging updates!! Are you using 3 or 5 pound weights??

I am on day 13, and still strudging along. I knew when I started I was out of shape but I thought I would be ok. I am still on level one and due to problems with my knee, will probably be here awhile. No weight loss and that's ok. I didn't get this way in 30 days so I really don't expect to be "the new me" in 30 days.

I am determined to stick this out and not just for 30 days but for as long as I possible can. I have never been a morning person, but now I wake up without an alarm.

Thanks for the encouragement to get started. If you are interested in reading about my journey to health, this is my blog url - http://brandi-privatefornow.blogspot.com/

I'm not even sure I can be in the same room with you now at church.

I'm going to have to borrow your video and shred it.

I mean, I'm going to have to do something besides shred cheese!

I did Jillian's online program for awhile, but it literally almost killed me! I almost passed out a couple of times, and wished I had a few other times! :) I much prefer Bob Harper myself. :) I did his thing last year and lost 18 pounds. I am totally impressed with anyone who can "hang with Jillian"! Way to go, and way to get others to do it also!

By the way, I really enjoyed your "Logged In and Tuned Out" seminar last month. And my 8 year old LOVES her "Between Girls" Bible. She was wanting a "real" Bible instead of her story Bible, so we got yours for her as a gift after her Dance Recital. She LOVES it. Thank you so much for all you do for our kids!

Hey Vicki...been following your shredding {give it up for you}, and I am on day 27 now!! I'm with you...I'll never not work out again, it's become so addicting. I did want to tell you, I was stuck at Level 2 as well and couldn't dream of moving on to #3, but my husband encouraged me & believe it or not, Level 3 seems MUCH easier to me...not so many planks {yes, the devil}! Move on for 1 day & see if you like it! I'll probably stick to #1 & #3 from here on out!! Laura D

Congrats on a dress size. I like the swim suit.

I got a Wii fit for Mother's day. 3 days down. So we'll see.

I am on day 8... sort of.
I did it once, it took me 7 days to recover- I attributed it to bad tennis shoes. So I bought some new ones and started over. But now I am on day 8 for real!

I cannot believe how much 20 minutes can do. I wore my heart rate monitor several times and I burn about 278 calories (obviously this is going to vary from person to person so don't use mine as an example of what everyone will burn). I went to the gym last night and it took me 45 minutes of eliptical horror and weights to burn the same amount of calories. Not to mention all the driving time, etc.

So Jillian clearly knows of what she speaks. And as much as I think she might be killing me, I am addicted to the Shred.

I just finished my 15th day. I did take Mother's Day off because hey I am a mom and I am allowed, right? I have noticed a big difference in my arms, legs, and abs. I have lost 3 lbs and probably 2 inches from my waist and my pants/shorts are looser around the mid-section. I actually just finished for the night and was qutie proud that I did it at 9 pm since I had not been able to do so during the day due to the kids' schedule today. Thanks for the accountability!

Tonight I completed Day 13 of The Shred. I moved on to Level 2 at exactly 10 days, thinking I would split each of the levels equally over the 30 days. Level 2 is hard, and I do hate those planks too, but it is a good feeling overall, like I am getting more accomplished.

I am a bit discouraged in that I have not seen any visible changes. I don't ever get on a scale because I don't want to be obsessed with numbers, and I just didn't think to measure myself. While I feel discouraged that nothing seems to be happening, I am proud of myself regardless for sticking with this, and I will continue to do so, whether I clearly see the results or not.

After all, faith is believing in the things that are not seen, right? I've got to keep going on no matter what, knowing that this is better for me.

I finished day 4 yesterday but only do her workout every other day. I am a regular exerciser so I thought I would move past level 1quickly...but had to drop down to 3 pound weights:-) I am using 5 pounders now and plan on moving to level 2 soon. I love this workout for the brevity. If it was any longer than 20 minutes I would have given in the first day! Now I keep saying the old Dory song from Finding Nemo except instead of just keep swimming I say "just keep shredding, just keep shredding, ..." Those of you with Nemo fans know what I am talking about! Thanks Vicky. I never would have heard of this video if you had not posted about it.

I am on day ten and I am enjoying it through the pain. I am alternating between the 30 day shred and Jillian's other 2 dvd's. She does not mess around. I love the challenge. It pushes me to do more. I love feeling like I am gettting a great workout in a limited amount of time. Congratulations on completing the shred. I am not quite ready to go swimsuit shopping, but I am getting there. Thank you for your encouragement and inspiration. Have a great week!

I stalled out in day 8 because of a really bad sinus infection and double ear infections. (That's a good excuse, right?) My ears are still plugged up, but your comment about being able to do it with the sound down has convinced me that today is the day to get back into the groove and do day 9. Thanks for that gentle push off the computer chair! :)

I must confess... I ordered the DVD, opened it, placed it by my TV... and it still sits there while I still sit here!~ I could list tons of reasonalbe excuses - However, I'm not moving that DVD until I move it right into the DVD player.

Vicki, Thanks for the challenge! I am getting ready to do Day 8. I'm staying with Level 1 because the cardio still tires me out. I stopped being painfully sore after Day 3. I hope to move on to Level 2 on Day 11. The planks scare me but I go to Step Aerobics that is lead by a 70 yr. old powerhouse that does them, so I can not be outdone. I have noticed my pants are looser and legs are toner. I like that the 20 minutes go by fast. I was procrastinating this morning because I have a sore throat but now I'm motivated to do it anyway.

I got my Shred DVD and did it for 2straight days--thought I was gonna die! Then the weekend came...a big birthday party at our house on Saturday, and Mother's Day on Sunday, so I didn't work out. Monday flew by and I didn't work out (bad trend here). Yesterday morning woke up and did the Shred with my hubby! He likes it, but he feels the pain too! Will be shredding again tonight, and plan to keep up with it daily until we leave for Florida on June 9th. I am not ready for bathing suit shopping, but I need a new one! Agh! Thanks for the encouragement!

This morning I completed day 7 of The Shred. I'm doing it every other day and walking/running on the other days. I'm still on level 1 and will hang out there for a while longer and then move up. I can definitely feel a difference in my clothes. Can't wait to see a difference in my arms so I'm definitely sticking to it! Love the picture of your daughter - my I'm so glad no one took a picture of me on day 1!!! But yes, I've been there and worked through it!!

Hi Vicki. I'm pulling myself out of bed very early to shred with the rest of you, and I'm not sure my husband and kiddos (still sleeping) are even aware of the torture I'm going through. Every morning I waver but somehow get up, and once I'm done I think, "That wasn't so bad!" Today was day 11, and I'm still on Level 1. The anterior raises (with side lunges) are what kill me! I don't think I've ever used those muscles.

A good day is when I can hang with Natalie a bit more, and my harder days I'm with Anita. But my BEST day will be when I can smile and keep my breathing unnoticeable through the whole workout the way they do!

I find myself staying distracted from my pain by trying to read what's on the top of Jillian's sweatpant logo. Has anyone figured it out? The bottom says "Girls, Texas"...and I wonder if that's a real place. :)

Thanks for getting me motivated and moving.

I just finished Day 23 and Day 3 of level 3. I don't think level 3 is much harder than level 2 if you start out doing the beginner version. And I think it works muscles I need to work (like gluts). Best of all, most of the plank moves offer a beginner version!!!

I haven't lost any weight, but shorts that used to be tight now fit. And my arms and legs both look better.

I even plan on bringing my DVD on our vacation!

My husband and I are 49 and we started the shred 19 days ago. We are still on level 1, but progressing along. We really want to "master" these moves before level 2 and we just cannot do the push-ups correctly..we are both still on the knees, in more ways than one! We both are toning and have lost a couple pounds, nothing major. It's great just to know we are being proactive!

I just joined all you shredders and I'm on day 5. The first two days I did the modified push ups, but I can tell it's working because I'm doing more and more real push ups! My arms quiver when I pick up my baby, so my next goal is for that not to happen. :)

I'm on day 13 and definitely seeing results. I might actually buy something sleeveless for summer to celebrate.

I've officially gone down one size in pants, and I started level 2 day before yesterday. I like it better than level 1, with the exception of Jillian's wardrobe choices. You'd think she could find cuter workout clothes.

At any rate, I am well beyond thinking I'm going to die from shredding and fully enjoying the benefits, as well as the fellowship of you other shredders. : )

Hi Vicki! I'm still in there with you! Missed a few days here and there due to circumstances (not very valid ones, but oh well). But I've been very faithful this week and, even though I've probably done the workout at least 12 times total, I've decided to start over as of this past Monday. I want to do it the literal 30 days straight and am determined to do so. I think that's what it's going to take for me.

I too am getting a little tired of seeing my workout partners in the same outfits every day, but I wear the same two outfits myself, so I can't really complain. And at least I can't smell them like I can sometimes smell myself! I talk to Jillian as we work out and some days I'm not very nice. I like your idea of playing the video sort of in the background on your laptop while you watch or listen to something else. May need to give that a try. I also must see if my daughter (15 years old) will join me. Who knows!

Thanks for the challenge and the encouragement. I'm determined!

Got my DVD about 19 days before we left for a month long camping trip. I was doing it every other day and walking a mile on the off days. I noticed a changed in my diet and energy before we left.. my only problem was the lunges and the squats I had knee surgery a couple of months ago and it was still too much for my knee so I just kept moving when she did those. I figure anthing beats sitting on the couch eating Hershey's Kisses!!

I am so glad I checked out the comments today. I started day 1 today and WOW- it's tougher than you would think 20 minutes could be. But, i am going to persevere and go ahead tomorrow (Providing i can get out of bed due to thigh and arm pain!)

I need to take all my measurements tonight to see if i make a difference, but i don't know how it couldn't, you can feel the burn!

Happy Shredding.

I moved onto level 3 today and 21 days going! I thought it was somewhat harder and it did challenge some muscles that hadn't been challenged just yet (not sure how any of my muscles have not been challenged). The planks are from the devil and therefore you must pray all the way through. I keep chanting, "I think I can, I think I can." No loss of weight just inches and I'm going to look great in a sleeveless shirt this summer. My husband is truly enjoying the results of the shred.

I went to level 2 last night. I just knew I would not be able to walk today-the plank-- I am just wondering if this is the calm before the storm.
On level 1 I got through day 8 and wasn't sore anymore- the workout still was tough but I was hoping to move up to level 2 to work more muscles-- so I will see tomorrow.
Day 2 of level 2--

No pain- no gain--
I really like the workout because it is quick and I feel stronger- I have been a runner all my life and thought I was strong - this has made me realize I need more strength- my run is better also-

For the first few days I really, I mean REALLY didn't like you much anymore. Some people develop an aversion to Jillian or her girls but I placed mine square on you. What kind of a friend would recommend this kind of torture? I'm now on Day 8 and glad to say that I like you again. Thank you for pulling me out of my complacency and giving me a doable plan! I planned to shred on the sly and not tell my husband until I had some results, but I was in so much pain for the first few days that I had to fess up. I can't wait to see what my body looks like without the layer of padding!

Hello: Got the DVD and have been on Level 2 for 3 days now. Did Level 1 for 12 days and I am surprised at my energy level and while I don't have a scale to weigh myself, I am wearing my old jeans that once were too tight! I am so thrilled with the Shred I ordered her "No More Trouble Zones" DVD for the flappy arms! Thanks for showing this to us, even thought at times I think I am not going to make it!!!

I loved your update - thanks. I bought the DVD after reading your recommendation a few weeks ago. I haven't really started it yet - because I am walking in an Avon Walk for Breast Cancer walk this weekend - and I didn't want to kill myself shredding before the walk got here. So - next week!! Can't wait to see if I get such impressive results. I'll let you know.

Is it cheating if I comment on another topic here? :) I too, am about to have a full nest. My Auburn GRADUATE arrives home tomorrow for 10 days before she heads off to dental school, and my SMU SOPHOMORE arrived home today! We have a 12 year old still living in the nest! It is wonderful to have everyone home again. Thank you, Lord!

Thanks for being so REAL about wanting a swimsuit bod for summer. I too began for the same reasons. I have always excercised (Zumba, walking), but the Shred has made the most difference. I am on day 21and this week I found out I am expecting baby #5! I am hoping to continue the shred during my pregnancy. I have lost 3 lbs. and some inches already by loosely following Weight Watchers points.
Thanks for getting us started!

I agree that planks are demonic. :)

I'm just a few days shy of my 30 days...but like you I've only lost 2 pounds however the inch thing has been huge!

Honestly, I'm a little scared to move on to level 3 so I'll probably stick with level 2 and alternate days with another dvd.

Congrat's on the new swimsuit!! That is awesome! I'm still dreading that particular shopping trip. :)

Got my email this morning that Jillian is on her way courtesy of Amazon.
Since baby number four and birthday forty, weight loss has not been accompanied by the desired corresponding body image. The same number on the scale does not reflect the appropriate body in the mirror or in the wardrobe.
After your posts, I'm hopeful this video will do what dieting and walking can no longer accomplish.
Thanks for sharing your journey!

I'm currently on day 4. I've been an athlete all of my life and thought this would be a piece of cake. It's not! However, I feel great and am excited to get to day 30! I hate that Natalie totally cheats when the camera goes to show Anita's moves on Level 1 lunge and bicep curls. She curls, but doesn't lunge. C'mon now Natalie...no wonder she does the harder moves! :)

Day 15 Down 3 lbs.

I have to tell you I'm most excited about my neck! I lost an inch in it!

See, I gain and lose in zones. Apparently I lost the first bit of flab from the head region. Now it's moving on down to the midsection..(Lost 2 1/4 inches on waist! Wahoo) Hopefully in the last few days I'll see some slimming below the waist. (Only lost an inch in the butt) But my legs are reshaping even if they aren't shrinking which isn't such a bad thing.

Sticking at Level Two for now. Level Three isn't as hard as it is awkward. And the Rockstars? Oh my heck. They are awful.

Congrats on finishing the first 30 Days! :)

So I commented the other day, but wanted to leave another comment to say that I started Level 3 tonight. (It's my 15th day of The Shred and I had only done Level 2 for 5 days.) I read comments from others who said that Level 3 wasn't so bad, and it really isn't! Some of the moves were tough, so Anita was definitely my companion during those, but overall, I really liked it, and I felt like I was just getting a whole lot more done. I do recommend Level 3; it's tough, but it does break up the monotany of Level 2 without being impossible.

Hopefully I'll be shredded soon!

I am on Day 4 and I can totally relate to being sore!!! i walk every morning for at least 30 minutes and I've added the Shred every evening. It really is amazing what can be done in 20 minutes. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of arm and tummy toning in another month!
Keep it up!! Go for it - Level 3!

I wonder if Jillian has any idea how rampant this "Shred-head" movement is?! I've told everyone I know...and some I don't via facebook and myspace...and everyone seems to be "shredding". When I say that it's only a 20 minute workout, it really gets people's attention. But I'm quick to tell them, "It's an intense 20 min. and just when you think you're about to die, it's over!!!" Someone recently asked me if this was part of a pyramid business and if I got paid for signing people up. hahahaha!!

So I'm on Day 18 - just moved to level 2 a few days ago. I don't do it every day..just because I can't with my schedule...but I actually look forward to it on the days I do. What's up with that?!?! I could see a huge change in my waist and hips right away (the scale was thrown away years ago!).

So, thanks, Vicki! You've inspired many.
One proud "Shred-head",
Tricia

I found your blog recently and ordered the DVD...started right in and was sticking to it...even did it the 1st day of Outdoor School...then missed the rest of the days at camp...came home to company &now it's time to get back to it. I've done 9 days...all on level 1. Definitely firming up, which helps with the motivation. I was shocked how hard 20 minutes could be! Also, some things that were easy early on got harder later...?

Jillian arrived yesterday. We had a packed day and church at night so I was able to avoid her. My thirteen year old daughter was more committed and found 90 seconds to visit with Jillian before going to bed last night. Today-all day-my dedicated teen has been whimpering about how bad her legs hurt. I've been laughing at her. I'm not laughing anymore.

OH MY GRACIOUS! Please someone tell me you couldn't make it all the way through Level 1! I made it to the end, but I had to stop a few times in the middle. It was either stop of my own free will or collapse in a heap as my legs were quivering too bad to jump or jack one more time. Seriously, who knew jumping rope-without the rope-was so challenging?!

Now, that same someone please tell me by the end of 30 days you COULD make it all the way to the end of Level 1 without stopping!

Here's hoping I can roll out of bed in the morning. On the bright side, I have four kids who can come and push at the same time!
